Val Kilmer and Bob Dylan met for the first time and it did not go well. The Willow actor and the I Want You singer once found themselves in the same place at the same time, and decided to hang out together.

The pair found out that they were both fans of each other’s work and were excited about meeting each other. But their meet-up wasn’t as delightful as they had originally expected, because Kilmer got a little ahead of himself in Dylan’s presence.

Eventually, Kilmer sent a tape to Dylan in apology.

Val Kilmer is a self-admitted big-time Bob Dylan fan. Once the Tombstone star had found out that Dylan was in New York right when he was. And he tried to meet him. And was pleasantly surprised to discover that Dylan was a fan of his movie.

He said (via Far Out Magazine):

“So Bob Dylan loves Tombstone, It turns out. I found out he was in New York so I called my friend and I said you know, I’d love to meet him, is there any chance and he says, ‘I don’t know, I’ll find out’. And the next call I got I thought was going to be my friend, but it wasn’t, it was Bob.”

The pair then chatted on the phone and Kilmer ended up inviting Dylan over, an offer the singer accepted. That’s when things went south.

When meeting a celebrity some faint, some shiver, and some talk gibberish; safe to say when meeting a star, not everyone is their most charming self, however much they want to be.

Val Kilmer once denied Bob Dylan’s request in what he assumed was a fun banter situation. Only to regret it later.

When Dylan went to visit Kilmer at the latter’s request, Kilmer was so excited to meet him that he got a little ahead of himself and denied a request from Dylan.

He recalled the instance saying (via Far Out Magazine):

“He shows up and sits down and he wants to talk about Tombstone, but I just can’t, you know, nor can I talk about any of his stuff. Eventually, he says, ‘ain’t you going to say anything about that movie?’ and I said, ‘do some ‘Blowing in the Wind’ and I’ll …that’s what I said to him, basically I said no.

I get like that sometimes. So I turned him down and, I thought, no one turns this guy down.”

Kilmer had made a mess of the situation. The Top Gun actor regretted his actions enough to try and make amends.

Kilmer was not proud of his behavior in front of Dylan. He said that he “felt like an idiot afterward”.

The Hollywood actor did not want his favorite singer to have a bad impression of him. Hence, he made Dylan a videotape. (via Far Out Magazine)

“I felt so bad about it. I was like how could I make it up to him? So what I did was, I recorded ‘It’s Alright Ma, I’m Only Bleeding’ but as Doc Holiday [from Tombstone] and I put in all of the big lines from the movie into the song and made him a little tape.”

Kilmer’s creativity in the apology is commendable and proof of just how much he was affected by the incident.

The anecdote of Val Kilmer losing his cool in front of Bob Dylan confirmed one thing: Stars, they’re just like us.
