To ensure the film’s high quality and authenticity in J. Robert Oppenheimer’s appearance, Murphy revealed that his makeup artists worked hard to highlight those stains on his fingers.

Cillian Murphy proved his determination and passion for acting by putting extra effort into portraying J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan‘s epic. During a conversation at the Santa Barbra International Film Festival, Cillian Murphy was pleased when Robert Durling asked him about Oppenheimer’s nicotine-stained fingers and how incredibly the makeup artists highlighted them. While explaining his dedication, the Red Eye star said (via X):
“I’m so glad you noticed that! Our amazing makeup artist Luisa Abel — we did that every single day and I would get really into the detail. But then I was like, ‘No one’s ever gonna see this.’ I’m so glad you saw that!”

“For me, the whole art of it is that you have to withhold more than you add. Do you know, by withholding, you let the audience join the dots emotionally? To me, that’s the sort of acting that I aspire to.”
The Dunkirk star explained that by holding back most of the emotions, he’s allowing the audience to connect deeply with the character and decode the emotions themselves. The actor wants the audience to decide how they perceive the complexity of J. Robert Oppenheimer, and since he’s not an easy character to understand, withholding emotions was the best way according to Cillian Murphy.
