“Not a single thing about the movie would change”: Even Zack Snyder Fans Have No Answer for 1 Batman v Superman Plot That James Gunn Eyes to Flip in His ‘Superman’ Movie
- 'Batman v Superman' surprised fans with Jimmy Olsen’s brief and sudden death.
- Zack Snyder’s plan involved larger arcs, but Olsen’s role felt minimal.
- James Gunn aims to revamp Olsen, giving him a more significant role.
When it comes to superhero showdowns, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is still a hot topic even eight years after its debut. The film often takes center stage in discussions about Warner Bros.’s DC Films strategy—what went sideways and what’s on the horizon. It’s a never-ending epic showdown of its own!
Even though Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice made a whopping $873 million worldwide, it still has fans scratching their heads. One big surprise was the unexpected death of Jimmy Olsen (a Daily Planet photojournalist from the comics and a good friend of Superman and Lois Lane).
As if Zack Snyder decided to throw a wrench into things by killing off Olsen early! It was a very quick exit for Olsen, who was supposed to be snapping shots, not getting shot. Fans were left wondering if it was a brilliant plot twist or just an unnecessary one.
The Controversial Death of Jimmy Olsen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
In Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Jimmy Olsen’s exit was too sudden. Played by Michael Cassidy, he appears in a quick cameo, only to meet his end at the hands of a warlord in Africa. In the film, he takes on the role of a CIA agent, assigned to shadow Lois Lane on her mission to Nairomi, Africa.
This plot twist took audiences by surprise since Olsen, usually a close buddy of Superman, barely had a role in the film. Director Zack Snyder later revealed (via Comic Book) that this shocking moment was part of a larger five-movie plan he had in mind. Does this mean Olsen’s brief appearance was meant to be more than just a cameo?
The 58-year-old compared the plot to a “chess game,” where characters get taken out for a reason. He continued, “Hopefully as they die off, they give us something, they teach us something as they go. And that’s kind of what their role is.” So, in Batman v Superman, Jimmy’s big role was just to die. Yet, fans think that his character’s removal barely made any difference. Check out some hilarious fan reactions:
Suck a good take that he could be entirely removed and not a single thing about the movie would change

James Gunn’s New Take on Jimmy Olsen
James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film is giving Jimmy Olsen a fresh makeover, and it’s quite a departure from Zack Snyder’s version. This time, Skyler Gisondo is stepping into Olsen’s shoes—literally! The first peek at Gisondo as Olsen shows him sporting that classic red hair and a grin.
Happy Anniversary to Superman’s pal, Jimmy Olsen, who debuted on this day in 1941 (although he did appear earlier as “office boy” in Action Comics 6). Created by Jerry Siegel, Joe Shuster & Bob Maxwell. I can’t wait for you to see @SkylerGisondo’s portrayal in #Superman on July… pic.twitter.com/PG7DdF7QSL

Gunn’s take is like a blast from the past with a modern twist. He might aim to give Olsen a bigger, more meaningful role—making sure he’s not just a background character but someone who really shines in Superman’s world. Fans who missed the classic Olsen can look forward to seeing him in a whole new light—no longer just a sidekick but a star in his own right.
Superman is set to be released on July 25, 2025. In the meantime, watch Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice on Max.
