Not Just Margot Robbie, 5 2024 Oscar Nominees Who Were Unfairly Treated by the Academy Awards in the Past
The Academy Awards are the most prestigious and recognized accolades in the entertainment industry, but not every artist is lucky enough to secure one under their name.
Fans and even some actors expressed shock after learning that Margot Robbie didn’t receive an Oscar nod in a major category for her role in Barbie, emerging as the biggest 2024 Oscars snub. However, other prominent figures in the industry including Christopher Nolan and even Robert Downey Jr. were brutally ignored in the past.
2024 Academy Awards Nominees Who Were Mistreated in The Past
The most awaited and grand event in the history of the entertainment world has almost arrived, with a star-studded lineup of artists, nominated in different categories. While fans’ fingers are crossed for their favorite star to win the Oscar, many won’t forget how Margot Robbie has been ignored for Best Actress.
However, apart from the Barbie star, five renowned figures in the film industry have finally received Oscar nominations after being overlooked for years. From Christopher Nolan to Robert Downey Jr., here are the stars previously mistreated at the Academy Awards:
Bradley Cooper
The most unlucky actor, despite earning four Best Actor nominations including five Best Picture nods Bradley Cooper remains overlooked. The actor made headlines in 2012, for his role in Silver Linings Playbook, followed by American Sniper and A Star is Born. Cooper has been nominated under Best Actor for these films that came out in different years, yet his contribution wasn’t recognized with an Academy Award.

Fans were hoping that 2018 was Cooper’s year to finally walk away with the golden statuette as his film received notable nods. However, the unfortunate journey of facing defeat at the Oscars continued, leaving Bradley Cooper with zero wins. This year the actor has again been nominated for Best Actor for his role in Maestro and has a little chance of winning the award.
Emily Blunt
Even though Emily Blunt finally received her first-ever Oscar nomination, many fans believed her performance in A Quite Place was worth the recognition. The actress emerged as a rising star in 2006 with her role in The Devil Wears Prada, and since then has had a history with engaging films.
Blunt was also expected to receive a nod for playing the iconic and leading star in 2018’s musical Mary Poppins Returns. However, the actress was extremely grateful for her first nomination after her role as Kitty in Nolan’s historical epic Oppenheimer.
Mark Ruffalo

Known for his iconic role of Hulk, Marke Ruffalo is also among the actors who weren’t treated fairly at the Academy Awards. The Marvel star has been nominated thrice under Best Supporting Actor for his works in The Kids Are All Right (2010), Foxcatcher (2014) and Spotlight (2015). Despite the impactful performances and well-received on-screen characters, Ruffalo still has zero wins.
Thanks for his role as Duncan Wedderburn in Poor Things, earning the 56-year-old actor his fourth Oscar nomination under Best Supporting Actor. Mark Ruffalo is again competing against his pal and co-star Robert Downey Jr. for their first Oscar win.
Christopher Nolan
This would surprise many, but Christopher Nolan has joined the list of deserving artists ignored at the Academy Awards. The filmmaker is experienced in delivering back-to-back hits and yet remains unrecognized during the grand award function. It’s hard to understand why The Dark Knight wasn’t considered an Oscar-worthy picture despite its creative brilliance at the hands of a cinematic innovator like Nolan.
Though he has been nominated for Dunkirk and Inception, The Dark Knight is still considered the best. The unwillingness to embrace superhero films at the Oscars disappointed many fans, until 2018 when Black Panther became the first Marvel film to receive a nomination under Best Picture.
However, Christopher Nolan has been nominated for Oppenheimer and is expected to become the game changer, by earning the filmmaker his well-deserved accolade.
Robert Downey Jr.
The actor who tops this list astonishingly is Robert Downey Jr., who’s nominated for Best Supporting Actor for playing the leading antagonist in Nolan’s summer blockbuster. However, even before Oppenheimer came, many expected Downey Jr. to secure his first Oscar after the 1992 film Chaplin.
The actor was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role, and each fan was convinced that Downey Jr. was the winner until Al Pacino won. His second nomination came out after Tropic Thunder for a Supporting Role, but the award was given posthumously to The Dark Knight actor Heath Ledger.
