Monkey D. Dragon is an important character in One Piece, standing as the leader of the Revolutionary Army and known as the “World’s Worst Criminal”, which goes to show how dangerous he truly is. Although little has been revealed about Dragon’s character so far, fans have been speculating about his Devil Fruit powers.

Although it has been popularly believed that Dragon has the power of Wind Logia, One Piece may have already left clues to suggest that it may actually be a Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit. This could explain why Dragon can not only control wind but also thunder and lightning.

According to a theory proposed by X users @writingpanini and @breaking2good, Monkey D. Dragon’s Devil Fruit might be a Mythical Zoan modeled after the thunderbird, a mythical creature that can wind and storms, as well as, thunder and lightning.

The thunderbird is a crucial symbol of Native American culture and the possibility that Dragon might possess a Devil Fruit linked to the thunderbird would hold a better explanation for the several instances he controls the weather since a Wind-based Logia fruit does not bestow the kind of power Dragon demonstrates.

Although it may sound bizarre, One Piece already made several references to the thunderbird and the Native American culture that seems to hold purpose behind it. There are clues hidden in the symbols of Freedom Fighters and the Revolutionary Army, and even Dragon’s tattoo which has been a source of mystery for ages.

In Chapter #1097, a symbol appears on the sails of the Freedom Fighters’ ship that bears a striking resemblance to the thunderbird as seen on totem poles. If Dragon does have the power to turn into the mythical creature, it would make sense for the symbol of the Freedom Fighters to be modeled after the winged creature given that Dragon is the leader of the group.

Moreover, the logo of the Revolutionary Army also appears to be an interpretation of the thunderbird with wings sprouting out on either side. The art style of the symbol also mimics Native American illustrations, further hinting that Native American culture is the inspiration behind Dragon’s mysterious Devil Fruit.

The thunderbird itself has made an appearance as one of Enel’s attacks in the Skypiea Arc, so it is not an unfamiliar concept for the fans. Thus, there is a possibility that the thunderbird exists within the world, hinting at the possibility that a Zoan-type Devil Fruit is modeled after it.

Monkey D. Dragon’s Mysterious Tattoo Is Connected To The Thunderbird

On a similar note, Monkey D. Dragon’s mysterious tattoo might also be connected to the Native American origins of the thunderbird. @writerpanini points out that Dragon’s tattoo seems to be inspired by the tattoo style of the Algonquian people, which is a mythical creature common to many Algonquian tribes.

Although fans had previously popularized the theory that Dragon’s Devil Fruit is a Wind-type Logia, it fails to explain how he is able to control the rain and lightning along with the wind. However, with the Final Arc of One Piece in sight, fans don’t have to wait much longer for the mystery behind Dragon’s powers to unravel.
