He said during the interview, “We are part of the universe, we are part of the world, we are part of the plans that they have been creating for the future installments of the DCU. But we are not tied to all the films from the past. Yes, our movie lives in the world where superheroes exist. But that doesn’t mean that a certain event, or certain alliance, or certain things from the past dictate where our film is going.”

Soto further mentioned, “Our first movie, the way we wanted to do it, was always with the mentality that we wanted to do two more, at least. And taking the traditional three-act structure of a story, we wanted our first movie to practically be the first act of a saga.”

Actor Xolo Maridueña, who shot to fame with Cobra Kai, will be playing Jamie Reyes in the movie, which is the first superhero movie centered on a Latino character. He had previously shared, “He’s kind of like a fusion of Green Lantern and Iron Man. He has a scarab from outer space that is attached to his body called Khaji da.”

The actor had previously expressed his excitement over playing a lead Latino character and noted, “The goal was to create a movie for a young me and a young Angel that said, ‘Hey, man, someone who looks like you or comes from a similar background can be a superhero.”

What to expect from Blue Beetle?

The official synopsis of the movie reads, “Jaime Reyes suddenly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology called the Scarab. When the Scarab chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he’s bestowed with an incredible suit of armor that’s capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero Blue Beetle.”

Blue Beetle is directed by Soto from a screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. After helming the independent drama film Charm City Kings in 2020, the Puerto Rican director makes his first foray into the superhero genre with this. The movie also stars Harvey Guillén, George Lopez, Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Elpidia Carrillo, and Belissa Escobedo. Oscar-winner Susan Sarandon plays the evil Victoria Kord.

According to FilmRatings.com, Jaime Reyes’ first feature film has received an anticipated PG-13 rating due to sequences of action and violence, language, and some suggestive references. The film’s trailer does depict several acts of violence committed by Blue Beetle but the context of the scenes is unknown. The film, which was originally intended for HBO Max, has been upgraded to a theatrical release, demonstrating the studio’s faith in the idea.

Blue Beetle is set for release on August 18, 2023.
