Starting with the no-nonsense portrayal by Phyllis Coates in the 1951 film Superman and the Mole Men, to Amy Adams’ emotionally grounded version, Lois Lane has become a more spirited and self-reliant journalist rather than a helpless girl waiting for Superman’s help.

Lois Lane is a significant character in DC’s ever-expanding universe and first appeared in Action Comics #1 all the way back in 1938. The character, which had been portrayed on-screen by actresses like Margot Kidder, Teri Hatcher, and Erica Durance is a product of their respective era’s cultural dynamics.

Rachel Brosnahan, who is known for her multi-dimensional performances, wants to modernize Ms. Lane as well. During an interview with ComicBook at the Superman trailer launch, she shared details about the kind of Lois Lane that was portrayed in James Gunn‘s upcoming movie.

I think as far as what else is different, you’ll have to check out the movie to see, but I love that she’s somebody who doesn’t understand what the word ‘no’ means and it’s motivating for her. We definitely see that side of her in this film.

She is fierce because, as a journalist fighting fake news, she embodies the advocate for truth. In her interview, Brosnahan also shared how her character would address modern problems affecting journalism.

In the movies, she evolves to fit what it would mean to be an intrepid journalist of each generation or each decade that she’s presented in. So, I think our challenge… Today we’re living in a world where print journalism to some is perhaps an endangered art form and she’s somebody who has dedicated her entire life to it.

As Brosnahan described her Lois Lane as “Feisty, marvelous, fiercely intelligent” in her interview with Entertainment Tonight, her character will be someone who will fight for journalistic ethics while displaying the tenacious spirit that has always characterized the character.

Amy Adams reflects on Rachel Brosnahan’s casting as Lois Lane

Amy Adams, who played Lois Lane in Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and Justice League, also shared her perception about Brosnahan’s casting. While speaking to Vanity Fair, Adams said that the role of Ms. Lane is a timeless one. Talking about Brosnahan, she said,

She’s wonderful, and I hope she gets to bring her sense of humor into it. She’s got such a great sensibility, such a good actress, but also such great natural comedic timing, and I hope we get to see some more of that.

While the portrayal by Adams was good enough to depict the realistic facets of the profession as well as the emotional depth that is required of being the loved one of Superman, some fans felt that the potential of the character was completely buried in the subsequent movies.

Adams wants Brosnahan to bring comedy and, more importantly, bravery to the part, elements that she believes audiences expect and appreciate in the contemporary world. Brosnahan has certainly built up her credibility with fans through her Emmy-winning performance in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and fans could expect that to be reflected in her upcoming role as the journalist.

Superman will be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.
