Real Reason Scream Needs a Ghostface Origin Prequel, Not Needless Cash Cow Sequels
American slasher franchise Scream is one of the most beloved horror franchises to date. Apart from the mainstream six movies, it also includes a TV series, merchandise, and games. The most recent addition to this series was the 2023 movie Scream VI starring Courteney Cox and Jenna Ortega.
Since the beginning of the franchise in 1996, five sequels have been made to the original movie. The announcement of the Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake leads the fans of the horror genre to the question of whether a prequel of the series would be an interesting take on the franchise.
Scream Is In Need Of A Prequel
The objective of prequels for any series is to explore the origins of the first project of the series. The prequel of this franchise will warrant a new take on the series. Additionally, the new perspective will differentiate the prequel from the previous films while maintaining the core elements of mystery and suspense.
Skeet Ulrich’s Billy Loomis and Matthew Lillard’s Stu Macher are arguably the best Ghostface killers of the franchise. However, the first movie does not provide much background on the friendship between Billy and Stu. In the movie, Stu also claimed that he was working with Billy under pressure and there were also scenes in which he was being ordered around by his best friend. So, the prequel would be a good chance to explore the dynamic between the two friends.

Another major thing that could be uncovered is what led the two friends to become murderers. There are a lot of reasons why they could have committed a crime as heinous as killing someone. Maybe it is the environment they grow up in or the media they consume. While it could have been the pure emotion of revenge that drove their desire to commit such a crime, the underlying cause could also be something more sinister.
Scream‘s Prequel Could Expand The Franchise
A prequel to Scream would also give the fans of the franchise something new to dwell on. Furthermore, there is also a huge chance that it would attract new viewers to the slasher series. The introduction of new characters in the prequel would also let the franchise deviate the story revolving around the same characters and hence, expand the Scream world with new spin-offs and sequels. As of now, Courteney Cox is a recurring character in the series.

Billy Loomis’ relationship with his victim Sidney Prescott (portrayed by Neve Campbell) and the mother of his illegitimate daughter Sam Carpenter were also something that could be explored as the audience would get to see the whole thing from Loomis’ perspective and even find out if he actually had any feeling for Sidney part from pure hatred. Overall, the Scream franchise could really benefit from a prequel.
