SUMMARY
  • Fran Drescher is going to play Timothée Chalamet's mother in Marty Supreme.
  • Rebecca Ferguson played the actor's mother in Dune and Dune: Part Two.
  • Fans believe Drescher's casting is going to give Ferguson a competition as Chalamet's on-screen mother because both are very popular and successful.

Written and directed by Josh Safdie, Marty Supreme is an upcoming A24 sports drama movie starring Timothée Chalamet, Tyler, the Creator, Gwyneth Paltrow, and more. Marty Reisman, a professional table tennis player, reportedly inspired the movie, but the production describes the story as a fictionalized original rather than a biopic. Reisnman was also called The Needle due to his slight build.

The story is set in the 1950s, and the actor’s first look from the movie has been out. Fans cannot wait to see Chalamet back on-screen. The actor is a fan of the director, who split up from his brother creatively and will be making his solo feature debut with the movie. A new cast member’s introduction to the team has got Chalamet’s fans thinking about Rebecca Ferguson.

Fran Drescher’s casting for Timothée Chalamet starrer Marty Supreme reminds fans of Rebecca Ferguson

SAG-AFTRA president and actress Fran Drescher has reportedly joined the cast of Josh Safdie’s upcoming sports drama Marty Supreme. The actress will be playing the role of Timothée Chalamet’s mother in the movie. (via Deadline)

She is known for her work on the CBS sitcom The Nanny, which premiered from 1993 to 1999. Drescher has also appeared in movies including The Beautician and the Beast, This Is Spinal Tap, and Hotel Transylvania.

Fran Drescher was elected as SAG-AFTRA president in 2021, and she led the union during a five-month strike in 2023. The actress’ arc as Marty’s mother in the movie has been kept under wraps by the studios, but her casting has reminded the fans of Rebecca Ferguson.

Ferguson plays Lady Jessica, Bene Gesserit, mother of Paul Atreides, played by Timotheée Chalamet in Denis Villeneve’s Dune series. In an interview with Reign with Josh Smith, the actress was asked how she feels about playing a mother to 28-year-old Chalamet, to which she said,

What does it feel like to be Timothée Chalamet’s mom? It’s like [puts an imaginary stake into her heart and makes choking noises]. You know. You kind of want to be an equal to that cool, sexy thing.

In her interview with THR, she recalled meeting the young actor for the first time in Budapest. She stated that Chalamet was very excited to play his character in the movie and she was excited to see his excitement.

Actresses including Amira Casar in Call Me By Your Name, Amy Ryan in Beautiful Boy, and more have portrayed Chalamet’s on-screen mother, but no one managed to match the popularity of Ferguson until Drescher’s casting. Being the president of SAG-AFTRA, Fran Drescher automatically holds a lot of power, and she has been appreciated for her work on screen.

As much as Chalamet’s fans are excited to see the union leader take on the role of his on-screen mother, they are also pitting Ferguson and Drescher against each other in a fun way. Fans believe Ferguson can face a little competition when it comes to who played Chalamet’s on-screen mother the best.

Rebecca Ferguson talks about working with Denis Villeneuve

Lady Jessica in Frank Herbert’s novel takes a back seat and lets Paul Atreides take the lead in the story, but filmmaker Denis Villeneuve tweaked the story a bit for the big screen. The director allowed Lady Jessica to continue playing a pivotal role in the movie, letting her be pregnant all throughout the movie.

In an interview with ScreenRant, the actress detailed her view on Villeneuve’s decision to leave her character heavily pregnant throughout the movie. She said,

I was so excited when Denis came up with the idea. He said, number one, ‘You’re going to be pregnant through the whole movie, and I’m going to cover you in veils.’ And I was like, ‘Great, two seconds, I’m going to call my agents. Did I sign for the second one?’ And then he said, ‘But you’re going to have internal conversations with her.‘ And I was like, ‘That’s interesting’.

Talking about having an internal conversation with her character’s unborn child Alia, the actress said they had to find a way to ‘balance crazy with not crazy’. Ferguson mentioned that they had tried various ways to get the sequence of her having a conversation with Alia right.

The filmmaker shared during his conversation with ScreenRant that having Lady Jessica talk to her fetus was a way to illustrate the power of the Water of Life. He added that it was a way to more precisely express how Alia becomes the abomination. It was known that Lady Jessica’s conversation with Alia added another layer of complexity and tension between her and Paul.

Speaking about Dune: Messiah, the actress shared with The Playlist that she hasn’t read the third novel, so she doesn’t know what is going to happen in the third part of the movie. But she admits that it’s lovely to see people being invested in the stories they are portraying on-screen. She joked that as long as her character does not go and sit somewhere hot and is covered in fabrics, she’s good with whatever.

Dune and Dune: Part 2 is available on HBO Max.
