Robert Pattinson Was Almost Fired From Twilight as He “Wanted to make it as arty as possible”
Robert Pattinson is one of the most popular actors in Hollywood. He rose to fame with his portrayal of the wizard Cedric Diggory in the fourth movie of the Harry Potter franchise, Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire. The role that brought him to worldwide attention was Edward Cullen in the romantic fantasy film franchise Twilight, based on Stephanie Meyer’s novel series of the same name.
Robert Pattinson was against three other actors for the lead role of Edward Cullen. He certainly would not have been chosen for it if it was not for his chemistry with Kristen Stewart who felt that he would do an amazing job at it. The Remember Me actor once revealed the one thing that almost got him fired from Twilight.
Robert Pattinson Was Almost Fired From Twilight
Robert Pattinson had his views about how he should be playing the 108-year-old vampire who was Bella Swan’s (Kristen Stewart) love interest. Usually, directors and creators don’t mind the actors’ opinions on their characters. However, Pattinson was strictly advised against doing so with his role which might sound wrong at first but the director and other members of the development must have had their reasons.
In an interview with GQ in which he discussed his most iconic role, Robert Pattinson revealed how giving Edward an emotional touch almost cost him his job. Recalling his mistake, he said:
“Like when I think back on it, the scene where Edward introduces Bella to his family for the first time, I remember that being the day because my agent and my manager came up for a surprise visit, and I was like, ‘oh hey,’ and just thought everything was fine and then at lunch, they were like, ‘okay, so whatever you’re doing right now, after lunch, just do the opposite or you’ll be fired by the end of the day.’”
Luckily, The Lost City of Z star was wise enough to know what was better for him at the time and so, he followed whatever instructions were given to him and the movie went on to become one of the best fantasy movies.
Robert Pattinson Wanted Edward Cullen To Be Emotional
Playing Edward Cullen might not have been Robert Pattinson’s brightest career moment but it certainly opened new doors for him in the industry as he went on to star in several blockbuster movies. All of the movies of the franchise were commercially successful even if some of them might have received mixed reviews.
Edward Cullen was supposed to be a lot of things and emotional was not one of them. This is where Pattinson went wrong because he thought that making the character emotional would do it good. In the interview with GQ, he said:
“I was 21, and kind of wanted to make it as arty as possible. And so we had this strange tension where the studio was kind of a little bit scared to make things a little too emo and stuff and I thought that was the only way to play it.”
Looking back, The Batman star realized that it was a mistake on his part. In fact, he said that he believed if the character had been made light-hearted, it might have ruined the entire thing.
