The filmmaker revealed his untitled Star Wars project in 2022 and described it as a bucket-list thing. A recent update about the untitled movie can be seen as a positive sign.

Shawn Levy’s untitled Star Wars movie to be penned by Jonathan Tropper

According to reports by Deadline, Jonathan Tropper is penning filmmaker Shawn Levy’s highly anticipated Star Wars movie. Insider Jeff Sneider initially shared the news in his newsletter. He has previously mentioned that the movie may involve the character of Rey in some capacity, but nothing can be said for certain.

The two of them have previously worked on the science fiction thriller The Adam Project, starring Ryan Reynolds, Jennifer Garner, Mark Ruffalo, and more. The movie holds a score of 68% from 216 reviews from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes, for a 73% audience score.

The duo also worked on adapting Tropper’s novel This Is Where I Leave You for a live-action film starring Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Adam Driver, and Jane Fonda. The movie, upon its release, received an average response, but given the ensemble, it was reported to be a letdown.

Tropper created a television series starring Antony Starr, and Banshee, which aired from 2013 to 2016. The show follows the story of an ex-con who adapts the identity of Lucas Hood, the murdered sheriff of the town, to hide from crime lord Rabbit, played by Ben Cross. However, he struggles to balance his life and comes into conflict with a local kingpin. The reviewers at the time stated that the show can be entertaining in some distinctive ways.

Despite an average start, Banshee’s following seasons received positive responses from critics as well as the audience. It was dubbed one of the best TV shows of 2015. The writer also served as the showrunner for Jason Momoa’s Apple TV+ show See. With such successful projects under his cap, fans believe that Tropper would be able to deliver a story that is probably going to restore the early days of the Star Wars franchise.

Shawn Levy says it’s a privilege to join the Star Wars project

Back in 2023, Shawn Levy spoke to Total Film about his awaited, untitled Star Wars project. He went on to describe how he landed the project.

Getting that call was a great day. I was in the editing room on All the Light We Cannot See, and I looked at my phone, and it was Lucasfilm’s president, Kathy Kennedy. Thus began a conversation that led to her inviting me in to develop and make my Star Wars movie. I’m putting everything I have into it because I love that world, and it is a privilege to get to join that galaxy.

In an interview with Variety, Levy mentioned that the Lucasfilm behind the Star Wars movie gave him the creative freedom he needed. He shared that Kathy Kennedy gave him a reason for bringing him on board, which was to have a Shawn Levy movie. The filmmaker noted,

She said ‘I want a story and a tone that reflect you, your taste, and what you bring to your movies—with a Star Wars story’. So I have felt extremely empowered.

Upon asking about the update on the movie, Levy said it’s in the very early days because the development process took a halt due to WGA strikes, but noted that he is going to trust his instincts with the story. The filmmaker added that he is going to go into the development of the Star Wars movie with the same optimism he had while filming Deadpool 3.

Not much has been known about the movie yet, but it is expected to be one of a kind now with Tropper joining. In the meantime, Levy is focused on Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, which is very close. Fans have a lot of expectations from the movie that is said to change the course of the MCU.
