Shawn Mendes recently appeared on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast, where in an honest conversation he opened up about how he has managed to navigate his breakup with Camila Cabello while being under the spotlight. Mendes described the situation as ‘brutal’ and added,
Camila and I have done the best job at preserving our private little fire of love for each other. No matter how strong mentally you are, when there are millions of people commenting on it, it’s so hard not to be affected by it, to be swayed by it, and to be inspired by it. To desire it because people desire it or to hate it because other people hate it. It’s just human. She and I have worked extremely hard to protect each other.
The singer mentioned that he does not go on social media or read or even care what people say about his love life or relationship, adding that it’s detrimental to the relationship itself. Upon asking how the two of them have tried to protect their relationship from the noises and constant chatter from the public and the media, he explained,
Immense honesty over communication.
Mendes added that they are not in a movie; their life is not a movie, but it’s real, and what people talk about is real love, and love is confusing and hard and goes through dips, pauses, breaks, and so much more. He mentioned that in situations where either of them is misquoted, or situations with miscommunication arise, they immediately rely on communicating directly. He added,
I’ll be the first one to text her. She’ll be the first to text me. So as long as we’re good, all the noise is just noise.
The Wonder singer also added during the conversation that neither of the two would ever cross a line because they deeply respect each other. Shawn Mendes noted that Camila Cabello is an amazing human being and incredibly understanding, thoughtful, and caring. He pointed out that communicating with her is not difficult, which is a huge part, and he is glad that he has her go through this.
Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello dated from July 2019 to November 2021. They reunited in April 2023 at Coachella, but their reunion was short-lived.
Shawn Mendes shares thoughts on how to be open to love
During the podcast interview, Mendes spoke about how an individual can be open to love, adding that it might sound too idealistic or optimistic, but according to him, it goes back to just finding what one wants in one’s life. He mentioned,
For me, it’s like do I want to be in a constant state of like I have someone? I have this firey thing that always is in mind, and it’s more than like ownership-like desire, which is super enticing and gorgeous.
The singer goes on to express that individuals should be able to question themselves on what they desire, like whether they want to feel a general kind of love or love from more places or just want to feel supported. He noted if people start questioning themselves about this, they’d be able to find the answers and move forward with it.
Mendes added that he didn’t want all of his eggs in one basket because life is uncertain. He mentioned
I would love nothing more than to meet my wife as I walk out of this door today, but at the same time, I just want to experience love until that moment.
His statement pretty much clarifies that the singer is single despite him being linked to his 51-year-old chiropractor, Dr. Jocelyne Miranda, since his split from Cabello. Even though they have been spotted on various occasions outdoors, i.e., usually on hikes or shopping, they have never been spotted showcasing any PDA or evidence of anything romantic between the two.
