Jennifer Lopez Reflected on Her Relationship With Her Mother
The Dance Again hitmaker began her professional career in 1991 as a Fly Girl dancer on the television series In Living Color. In addition to her singing career, she has appeared in several movies in Hollywood. She became a musical force in the entertainment industry by earning several accolades and praise from her fans and critics. Her Netflix documentary Halftime made many news headlines last year in which she revealed her mother “beat the s**t out of her.”
In the clip, Jennifer Lopez and her mother, Guadalupe Rodríguez, claimed they used to have a lot of arguments in the past. Lopez said,
“She [Rodriguez] did what she had to do to survive, and it made her strong, but it also made her tough. She beat the s–t out of you.”
Lopez’s mother added,
“I was far from the perfect mother. The one thing I can always say; everything I did, I did with their best interest at heart. I always had the highest expectations of them. It wasn’t to be critical. It was only to show you that you could do better. Jennifer, she gave me the hardest time to tell you the truth. We butted heads a lot.”
Talking about her complicated relationship with her mother, the singer said,
“My mom was like, If you’re gonna live in this house, you’re gonna get your education. We got into a bad fight one night and I just left.”
In the documentary, the Hustlers movie star admitted that she had to leave home at 18 after a fight with her mother, Rodriguez.

Talking about her mom, the singer told People magazine,
“Listen, my mom was also a fun mom. My mom was also the mom; who got me into musicals and introduced me to all kinds of music. I am an entertainer because of my mom. But I’m also able to survive the things I’ve survived in this business because my mom was tough. I don’t think she could realize what she was preparing me for, but she did.”
Jennifer Lopez noted that being an outsider in the entertainment industry made her feel like an “underdog” at times.
She explained,
“I always feel like I was scrapping from the bottom. Always. I always felt like I wasn’t the one that was supposed to be in the room. That’s part of being Puerto Rican and from the Bronx and a woman.”
Lopez added,
“You know what I mean? All of that stuff. Not being born into a family with money. Not knowing anybody in the business. I just went out there and said, f— it. I’m going to just try. I’m going to try to get in here.”
