Much like Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness were couple goals for 27 years before their unfortunate split in 2023. Their divorce obviously came as a shock to many, but it also makes one wonder what was it that kept the marriage going for that long.
Love was undoubtedly the primary factor for the couple. However, there was a little rule as well that kept their relationship smoothly going. Jackman once revealed what this rule was and that it was set by his wife.
Hugh Jackman Revealed the One Rule That Helped Him and His Wife Have a Successful Marriage for 27 Years
It would not be too much of a cliche to say that Hugh Jackman‘s life changed on the night of his graduation from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 1994. He was unemployed for less than a minute after becoming an acting graduate as he received a call, as he was offered a role in the Australian TV series Correlli.
Not only did the show mark his first screen performance, but it also helped him meet the love of his life, his future wife Deborra-Lee Furness. Jackman personally designed a ring for Furness, which had a Sanskrit inscription on it, and the two got married in 1996.
In 2019, The Greatest Showman star revealed the rule his wife had laid down to keep their relationship going for years (via Metro). He said:
She has the two-week rule. No rules that take you away that long. That is the rule, which we’ve kept for 25 years.
Jackman also stressed the importance of being honest with a partner, and how it was a crucial pillar for their relationship.
Even if it’s embarrassing. Even if you’re shameful, even if you’ve screwed up, be honest. If you can trust each other, that’s better. She knows more about me than anybody else.
Honesty is the building block of all relationships, whether romantic or platonic. Jackman and Furness certainly seemed to understand this even if their relationship did come to a tragic end last year.
Deborra-Lee Furness Being the One for Him is One Thing Hugh Jackman Knew He Was Sure About
Things seemed to be going absolutely great for the couple, so their official announcement regarding their separation through PEOPLE left some scratching their heads. This, however, does not change the fact that an indecisive Jackman knew Furness was the one for him since the beginning.
In a 2018 interview for the podcast Aussies in Hollywood with Jenny Cooney, the couple sat down to reminisce about the beginning of their relationship. Jackman said:
I’m a very indecisive person, Deb really knows this about me. I can count on my hand the amount of times in my life anything has felt that clear to me, and when it happens it’s such a relief for me. I just knew 100 percent, I even knew when she was trying to work out reasons to break up with me.
Early on in their relationship, Furness tried to break up with the Les Miserables actor, but the latter did his best to convince her otherwise, and it took him three weeks to succeed. He was thankful that he was able to do that, even though the relationship has now ended.
