“She saw her as one more whim of her son”: Pique’s mother Hated Shakira, Called Her an Intruder Despite Her Worldwide Fame
The couple’s publicized love story has enamored fans of Colombian singer Shakira and Spanish footballer Gerard Pique. But not everyone was happy about their relationship, including Pique’s mother, Montserrat Bernabeu. Bernabeu reportedly saw Shakira as an intruder in their family due to her upbringing.
She had several problems with her, including the age difference between her son and the famous singer. Bernabeu struggled to accept Shakira as a family member because she saw her as nothing more than her son’s passing fancy, even though she was a global superstar.
A Shocking Intrusion in the Family
For many families, cultural differences and backgrounds can sometimes pose challenges when accepting a new member. It was no different in the case of Shakira and Pique’s relationship. Bernabeu is said to have come from a very closed and traditional environment and viewed Shakira as “an intruder” in their family from the start.

According to insiders, Bernabeu was already taken aback by the fact that she was originally from Colombia, a country far from the shores of Spain.
“We are talking about very closed environments. For many families in the city, if you are from Madrid you are already an intruder. Imagine if you are from Colombia! For ‘Montse’ (Bernabeu), it was a shock. She saw her from the beginning as an intruder. A fish out of water,”
In addition to the obvious cultural gap, Bernabeu reportedly disliked other things about Shakira. The difference in age between her son and the Grammy-winning singer was one of them. It appeared to bother Bernabeu that Shakira was ten years older than Pique.
“[Montserrat] was bothered by everything about her: that she was 10 years older than her son, that she was a singer, no matter how successful she was, that she was not Catalan or at least from a recognizable family. It is a very closed circle and very classist.”

Reports state that Bernabeu had difficulty trusting Shakira and thought of her as nothing more than her son’s latest passing fancy. She had difficulty seeing Shakira as a permanent part of their family because she thought the relationship was temporary.
“She (Montserrat Bernabeu) didn’t trust her (Shakira). She saw her as one more whim of her son. Over time, she got used to the idea.”
Bernabeu, who came from a conservative and exclusive group, may have found it difficult to accept Shakira because she was viewed as an outsider and did not come from a well-known family or background.
Overcoming Challenges
Shakira and Pique’s relationship has persevered despite difficulties and differences. There are two children from their union: Milan and Sasha. The couple has been together for over a decade. As time has passed, it appears that Bernabeu has accepted Shakira into their family.
Bernabeu has not made any public statements regarding her relationship with Shakira. Still, it has been reported that she assisted Pique in keeping his affair with Clara Chia Marti secret from Shakira. This shows that their relationship has matured, and Bernabeu now considers Shakira an important part of her son’s life.
