Sigourney Weaver Rejected Sylvester Stallone’s Expendables for a Sad Reason Despite Being an Action Legend Herself
Who would want to refuse an opportunity to star alongside Sylvester Stallone in one of his successful franchises? Well, Sigourney Weaver turned out to be one of the few.
Despite being an action legend, Sigourney Weaver turned down the offer to star alongside Sylvester Stallone in The Expendables in which she could have played one of the key roles. Her role in the Alien franchise which is also known as Weaver’s breakthrough role made her an established actress in Hollywood.
Sigourney Weaver Refused to Star Alongside Sylvester Stallone in Expendables
This might come as a surprise to many who already know how talented Sigourney Weaver is when it comes to slaying roles, especially her breakthrough role as Ripley in the Alien series, that when the actress was offered to play one of the key roles in Sylvester Stallone‘s Expendables, she was already an acclaimed star in the world of movies.

Weaver has often mentioned how fond she was of playing action-packed roles in movies when she was young which gave her immense satisfaction. Once talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Sylvester Stallone talked about Weaver’s potential role and stated:
“With The Expendables we’ve got a situation where we’re in unchartered waters. Do we put all women actresses together, would that really work? Or do we have some women who are actually really known to be tough fighters, so she’d get the house, the kids, and my mercenaries!”
Stallone hinted at his desire to work with the Ghostbusters star during the 2014 interview, however, the actress couldn’t accept the offer and there were speculations about Weaver’s denial being influenced by her feelings toward the treatment of women in the action genre.
Sigourney Weaver Claimed She Was not Considered a Legitimate Action Hero
Sigourney Weaver is indisputably an incredible actress who has contributed to the world of films with her talent for crafting action roles in the best way possible. However, the Heartbreakers star once revealed that despite being acclaimed as a renowned personality in the industry, she wasn’t considered a legitimate action hero just because she’s a woman. Weaver to Variety via Far Out Magazine that:
“I seem to fall between the cracks. I’m not considered a legitimate action hero because I’m a woman. But I’m not considered in the same category with actresses like Glenn Close and Meryl Streep because I’m an action figure.”
The actress explained the paradox of her career that brought hurdles for her in securing roles in various movies. However, Weaver also acknowledged the progress in Hollywood that has indeed allowed female actors to get cast in action-packed films, for instance, our Marvel and DC female superheroes like Black Widow, Wonder Woman, and many others have secured movies featuring them in the titular roles.
