Minnie Driver recently talked about her past relationships and said she thinks marrying her ex-fiancé Josh Brolin would have been a huge mistake. The actress stated in an interview with The Sunday Times:

It would have been, I think, the biggest mistake of my life.

She explained that her childhood has influenced her views on marriage:

If I look at my history, what it did was make me want to be married so much and then choose men who were so not the right men to be married to. So I would carry on longing to be married and to have that conservative version [of a relationship], find men who had no interest in that, and then if one did, run a mile.

Her parents — father Ronnie Driver, and mother Gaynor Churchward — were never married, and her father had another family. She added that this made her really want a traditional marriage, which often led her to pick partners who weren’t right for that kind of commitment.

However, when a man did show interest in marriage, she would get scared and pull away. This pattern happened in her relationship with Brolin too, leading to their broken engagement in 2001.

The couple canceled their wedding in October 2001 after being engaged for five and a half months. Later, the Thanos actor married Kathryn Boyd Brolin in 2016, and Driver found her true love in writer and filmmaker Addison O’Dea.

Even after facing difficulties before, Minnie Driver has found joy in a relationship that breaks away from usual expectations. She’s now with writer and filmmaker Addison O’Dea, who, as Driver describes, isn’t interested in marriage but has all the qualities she’s ever wanted in a partner. The 54-year-old said in the same interview:

But now I’m with someone who doesn’t want to get married but who is the most devoted, loving, extraordinary … everything I could have wanted in my childhood idea of a husband, he actually is.

Love and marriage aren’t the same for everyone (as seen in the case of the British-American star). Marriage can be great, but it’s not everything. The key is finding someone who shares your values and makes you better, whether you’re married or not. That’s what leads to real, lasting happiness.
