A 67-year-old man named Gary Estes paid $4000 for a Taylor Swift-autographed guitar at the Ellis County Wild Game Dinner in Waxahachie (via NBC News). It is an annual charity event that benefits agricultural-based education efforts for local youths. The body of the instrument was adorned with decor related to Swift (via TMZ).

In a surprising turn of events, Estes walked up to the auctioneer to collect his win and began smashing the guitar with a hammer which was handed to him by someone working at auction. Although the instrument, as one can imagine, was no longer usable, Estes walked away with it happily.

Rob Bartley, an attendee of the event, spoke to The Independent regarding the incident and revealed that this is not the first time such an auction of a guitar related to Swift has taken place. In fact, it happened earlier this year at a different event. He also suggested that it might have happened because of the Look What You Made Me Do singer’s political inclination.

The signed guitar comes with a certificate of authenticity and was put on sale on eBay for a minimum of $100. The bid has since reached $2600 according to Daily Mail. What is interesting about this whole thing is that the guitar is allegedly not actually signed by the songstress because the authenticity certificate obtained by TMZ does not have a seal from her merchandise company.

The fact that people are even willing to buy the smashed instrument is telling enough about the kind of craze there is for anything signed by the Grammy-winning artist. This brings one to wonder about the motives behind Estes destroying the guitar so brutally.

After talking to Estes, auctioneer Craig Meier, a spokesperson for the event, told NBC News that it might have been a joke, but it was a political statement as well.

Taylor Swift, it became a political thing, and that was kind of the gist of it, just a light-hearted bit of a dig at Taylor for coming out politically and entertainers using their influence to influence politics.

Estes is the owner of an electrical wiring business. Being a supporter of Trump, he wasn’t pleased with Swift’s endorsement of Harris. He said: “Yes, you can connect the dots there.” However, during his chat with the outlet earlier, he had stated that he did not have anything against The Man singer.
