“That wasn’t my choice”: Mission Impossible 7 Star Hayley Atwell Hated Her Marvel Return, Criticizes MCU’s Controversial Decision
Hayley Atwell is currently seen alongside Tom Cruise in her latest movie, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. In a recent interview, Atwell commented on how 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness took her character, Peggy Carter, in a different direction than her expectations. Atwell opened up on the brutal ending of her character in the multiverse sequel. Captain Carter said that the character’s storyline in Doctor Strange 2 did not match the trajectory Atwell had for Peggy.
Hayley Atwell Vexed Over Her Doctor Strange 2 Role
While speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Hayley Atwell shared that Captain Carter’s quick cameo was a “frustrating moment.” Host Josh Horowitz joked about how quickly and swiftly her character in the film was killed with her own shield by Scarlet Witch. Atwell explained her disappointment saying,
“…She’s like, ‘I could do this all day,’ and then followed by she’s immediately cut in half by a frisbee, and then the audience being like, ‘She can’t do it all day… Apparently, you can’t, so… Yeah, egg on your face.’ And, I’m like, ‘Oh, it doesn’t really serve Peggy very well.”
The What If actress said, “I got so much slack for my minor scenes, I’m like, That wasn’t my choice.” In the other half of the podcast, Atwell shared how much she enjoyed a prominent role in Disney+’s What If…? series. In her words, “And I love that in that, they’ve been able to give her just more to do as Captain Carter. Captain Britain.” It is crystal clear that the Mission Impossible star loved her character more in the previous series.
What’s Next for Hayley Atwell in the MCU?
Despite Captain Carter being a part of the MCU since August of 2021, Atwell has enjoyed a lengthy, although sporadic, tenure within the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Peggy Carter, who the What If actress has portrayed at different ages and in different mediums.
Commenting on Captain Carter’s future in the MCU, Atwell said, “Well…I haven’t got news for you. But I share your enthusiasm. And I would love to if Marvel did find a home for her; that’s a home that feels worthy of her in terms of her evolution as a character and development as a character.”
Though as it is seen on the surface that Captain Carter’s story is over as Wanda seemingly killed Captain Carter in Doctor Strange 2, it’s possible that this version of Atwell’s new heroine isn’t the same as who audiences know from What If…? Hence it can be safely said that Captain Carter has a future, but Atwell’s concerns over better representation of the character should be paid heed to.
