DC’s Blue Beetle is a high-stakes project for multiple reasons. It has come after DC’s streak of box office failures and it is the first film of James Gunn’s DC reboot. Its performance on the former front is debatable. But when it comes to the latter, it can be said that the movie has plenty of easter eggs connecting Jaime Reyes’s Blue Beetle played by Xolo Mariduena to other DC superheroes.

The film is laden with references to multiple superheroes from the DC comics which can only be spotted with a keen eye. Director Angel Manuel Soto has slowly been revealing it all.

Angel Manuel Soto revealed in an interview with Collider that Ted Kord being alive is not the only secret the film holds.

The film follows Jaime Reyes, a Mexican-American teenager who bonds with an alien Scarab named Khaji-Da who eventually turns Jaime into his superhero form which we know as Blue Beetle. Interestingly, the film follows as much of Khaji-Da’s origin story as Jaime’s.

During Khaji-Da’s origin story, it is hit by a green light, which is caught by a few keen-eyed superfans. But it was so momentary that fans were doubtful if it meant what they thought it did. Lucky for them, Soto came to save the day and clarify that the flash of green light is in fact a Green Lantern.

“There’s more. At the beginning of the title sequence, for those of you guys who follow the Blue Beetle comics, there’s a green light that hits this character, and that’s a Green Lantern. If you didn’t catch it, watch it again.”

The director didn’t clarify which Green Lantern it was. But this revelation has fans abuzz with speculation and the lack of specification adds to it.

What could a Green Lantern cameo mean for future DC projects?

Not everyone was able to spot the green light that struck Khaji-Da when he was traveling through space. But now that it is known, the discourse of what a feature like this could mean for the bigger picture.

Khaji-Da traveled through space decades ago, it is possible that it could be any Emerald Knight we know or very much not. This film does a great job of extending the Green Lantern Corps lore in the DC universe.

Even though in all the years of its making, the Blue Beetle was never intended to be in continuation with any other DC characters the final cut has set up plenty of other DC heroes and supervillains.

Blue Beetle is now available in theatres near and far.
