Robert Pattinson is set to don the cape and cowl once again as filming for the sequel The Batman 2 will commence this August. DC Studios head James Gunn confirmed the movie is on track for an October 3, 2025 theatrical release. Gunn revealed that the script for The Batman sequel will be submitted in early February, after which casting will begin for the follow-up to Matt Reeves’ 2022 blockbuster that grossed over $770 million globally. Pattinson garnered praise for his gritty take on the Dark Knight detective facing off against Paul Dano’s disturbed Riddler. Plot details remain tightly under wraps, but Reeves has hinted at introducing the iconic villain Hush in the next installment.

According to ComicBook.com, insider DanielRPK reported that Hush is planned as the key antagonist for The Batman’s next outing. In DC comics, Hush is Thomas Elliot, a crooked surgeon and childhood friend of Bruce Wayne’s. Hush previously teamed up with the Riddler in the comics to systematically destroy Batman’s life. Reeves included a nod to the character in The Batman with the Riddler graffiti “HUSH” at one point.

“I think Hush is a really interesting one to do,” Reeves told Twitter Movies last year.

While not outright confirming Hush will be the villain, Reeves made clear the bandaged baddie is high on his list of Batman rogues to explore. Per insider reports, The Batman 2 is slated to begin production in Summer 2024. That would allow enough time for the movie to meet its scheduled release date of October 3, 2025.

The Batman was filmed from January to March 2020 before a lengthy pandemic delay. If the sequel sticks to a similar schedule, cameras could roll between June and August 2024.

Reeves will be writing the script alongside Mattson Tomlin, who co-wrote the screenplay for the first installment. Dylan Clark will also return as producer.

What Other Villains Could Appear?

While Hush is strongly rumored as the key foe, insiders indicate Reeves wants to introduce multiple rogues for Robert Pattinson’s Batman to face.

Clayface is one villain said to be in consideration. The DC mutant criminal can shape-shift and mold his body, allowing for intriguing showdowns with the Dark Knight.

With The Batman ending on a cliffhanger of Gotham City flooded Reeves has also teased bringing in more elemental villains like Mr. Freeze or Killer Croc. And don’t rule out additional appearances from the first film’s foes either.

After being left alive in Arkham Asylum, Paul Dano’s Riddler could craft more zany puzzles from his cell. And Colin Farrell’s Penguin is already getting his own HBO Max spinoff series to further expand on his mob boss character.

Along with new villains, fans are hopeful Reeves might introduce more allies for Pattinson’s brooding Batman to interact with.

The Dark Knight formed a tenuous bond with Catwoman (Zoe Kravitz) in the first film. Perhaps in a sequel, iconic sidekicks like Robin or Batgirl could come into the fold as well. Reeves has expressed interest in further exploring Batman’s supporting cast down the line.
