The Estimated Cost Of The Coronation Ceremony
Although the budget for King Charles’ coronation ceremony has not been revealed, predictions suggest the historic occasion might cost the nation around $126M. It has been mentioned by the government, the burden of the expenditure is to be levied on the taxpayers of the UK. Shocked to the core by the ginormous amount of money assumed to be spent, people start comparing the cost of the previous monarch’s coronation ceremony.
It has been revealed, the late Queen Elizabeth II‘s coronation cost $1,152,676 in 1953 which estimates to be $25M in today’s monetary evaluation. Dating further back to when George VI was crowned in 1937, the coronation ceremony cost, $573,810 which stands at an approximation of $31M in today’s world. It was also revealed, George VI’s crowning was the most expensive of all coronations in 300 years.
Thus, comparing two of the previous coronations, people are perplexed by King Charles III‘s crowning expenditure. Especially considering the cost of living crisis in the UK, the coronation is branded a complete waste of taxpayers’ money. Royal Family critics gather around to scrutinize the unnecessary expenses against the backdrop of strikes, low wages, and deteriorating living costs, prevailing in the nation.
Royal Family Critics Scrutinize The Expenses
With more than half of the adult population of the country questioning the expenses of the crowning ceremony, people believe the government should not fund the occasion. Graham Smith, a Royal Family critic believes, “Charles is already king. There is absolutely no need to go through with this expensive pantomime”. With King Charles’ estimated personal fortune being $2.2B, people believe the expenditure should be burdened on him rather than the taxpayers.
Throwing light upon the nation’s crisis, Smith stated, “At a cost of tens of millions of pounds, this pointless piece of theatre is a slap in the face for millions of people struggling with the cost-of-living crisis”. Richard Burgon, MP for Leeds East appearing for a debate on the amount of public money being spent on the coronation, stated the apt reasons for people’s rage.
“The King has a reported personal fortune of £1.8bn, and given the monarch already benefits from not paying inheritance tax, it’s easy to see why so many people are not happy with this,” Burgon pointed out.
Even Scottish National Party MP Ronnie Cowan highlighting the cost of living challenges, stated, “What evidence do you have that they (citizens) think the UK government should pay for this coronation?” Discussing how George IV’s coronation in 1821 was a great theatrical spectacle, as he was known for his extravagance, it still summed up to a mere $25.9M in today’s evaluation.
Thus, the taxpayers are having the benefit of the doubt, as to what sort of extravagance is adding up to King Charles’ $126M coronation ceremony.
