We all watched Hollywood romantic comedies from the 1990s as children, hoping one day to find our own prince charming identical to our favorite fictional characters, or we watched action movies that inspired us to imagine ourselves saving the world someday ourselves. But have we ever questioned where these 90s icons are today who gave us hope that our dreams might also come true?

Hollywood enjoyed the height of its popularity in the 1990s. In the years afterward, some of the biggest stars of that time have gone on to have successful careers, but some have chosen to give up being in the spotlight completely. Here are six celebrities from the 1990s who declared they would never go back to Hollywood.

1. Cameron Diaz

One of the most well-known actresses in the 1990s and early 2000s was Cameron Diaz. She appeared in several successful movies, such as The Mask, Charlie’s Angels, and Knight and Day. However, Diaz declared her acting retirement in 2014. She has stated that she is content with her life outside of Hollywood and does not long for the fame and spotlight. Additionally, she said that she preferred being a mother to being on the big screen.

2. Meg Ryan

Everyone had a crush on Meg Ryan, who was often known as “America’s Sweetheart“. She won over audiences everywhere with her beauty and endearing smile in a succession of memorable romantic comedies. From Sleepless in Seattle to When Harry Met Sally, Ryan starred in some of the most beloved films that are still admired today.

4. Rick Moranis

Rick Moranis, a comic actor best known for his silly and goofy roles in Ghostbusters and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, also announced his retirement from acting quite some time ago. In 1991, his wife passed away from breast cancer, leaving him to raise his two children alone. In 1997, Moranis made the decision to stop acting in order to take care of his two children. He believed that it was his most crucial duty, and that marked the end of his time in Hollywood.

5. Daniel Day-Lewis

One of the most admired actors of his generation is Daniel Day-Lewis. For his roles in Lincoln, There Will Be Blood, and My Left Foot, he has received three Oscars. Day-Lewis declared his retirement from acting in 2017. After giving it some thought, he claimed that he had decided to go ahead with his plan since it was “something I had to do.” He continued by saying that although he has always hated the need to quit acting, this time the desire to do so became compulsive and he didn’t want to get involved in another production.

6. Phoebe Cates

In the 1980s, Phoebe Cates was idolized by every teen. She played the lead in several movies, such as Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Gremlins, and Princess Caraboo. She now runs her own boutique in New York City in addition to carrying out her responsibilities as a wife and mother.
