“They are so obviously ill”: Emily Blunt’s One Regret from $326M Movie That Made Anne Hathaway a Global Superstar
The Devil Wears Prada was significant in elevating the stardom of Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt in their careers. In the 2006 movie, the young actresses starred alongside veteran actress Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, the powerful and demanding editor-in-chief. However, their standout performance with Streep came along with a few sacrifices.
Actress Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt have to go through significant body transformations to be considered worthy to star in the prominent fashion classic tale. Despite, her dedication to the role, Emily Blunt, who played Emily Charlton, wasn’t thrilled about the tough diet and workouts needed to fit the part.
Emily Blunt is critical of the glorification of extreme thinness in movies
Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt have committed to the David Frankel movie by losing the required amount of weight for their characters. While both aced their roles, Blunt is not overwhelmed and is worried about how weight loss in movies might badly influence young girls’ idea of beauty.
While speaking to Parade, the actress expressed her concern about the media’s influence on body image and the pressure it puts on people to conform to unrealistic standards.
“It is becoming worrying how many super-thin girls we see walking around, and they are so obviously ill. It is kind of accepted and it is glamorized more than it should be”.
Blunt also mentioned that it has been alright for her to lose weight for the movie since she came from a naturally thin family. Moreover, since her character was on the “edge of anorexia”, she felt that it was important to commit to the role.
Anne Hathaway had to undergo extreme body changes for the film
However, losing weight was especially challenging for Hathaway, who was initially instructed to gain weight for the film. In an interview with People, the Interstellar actor said that the director and producer asked her to gain 10 pounds, which she eventually achieved through consuming junk food and beer.
Later, she had to lose even more weight because she couldn’t fit into the costume requirements for the movie.
“The director and producers asked me to gain 10 lbs, It was a nightmare. It took me about a month to gain it and two months to lose it!”
Hathaway, in a different interview, reflected on the extreme measures that she and Blunt have to undergo for the filming process. “I was thin for my height. I was basically stuck with fruit, vegetables, and fish. Blunt and I would clutch at each other and cry because we were so hungry,” she told US Weekly (via Contact Music).
The Devil Wears Prada remains a memorable film because of the dedication and stellar performance of Hathaway and Blunt. The story revolves around a young journalist, Andy Sachs, who is assistant to the formidable fashion magazine editor, Miranda Priestly.
The 2006 movie features Hathaway as Andy transforms from a novice to a confident and dynamic worker under Miranda’s strict rule. Blunt’s Charlton is Mirada’s sharp-witted senior assistant, who serves as a mentor and rival to Andy.
