“They did a lot to me”: Sofia Vergara Opens Up on Her Painful Facial Transformation For Griselda
Sofia Vergara is appearing in Netflix’s biographical crime drama miniseries Griselda. It is her first time in a long time appearing as a leading lady in a project. Based on the life of Griselda Blanco, the drug lord, or the Cocaine Godmother, the show seems promising in a lot of ways.
And while it is an exciting and thrilling prospect for Vergara, it has certainly not been an easy one. While playing the character itself is a rather great challenge, mantaining resemblance with Blanco in terms of appearance has also been tough for the actress.
Sofia Vergara’s Painful Facial Transformation
Agreeing for the role of Colombian Queenpin Griselda in the eponymous Netflix show, proved to be more challenging for Sofia Vergara than she had imagined. Interestingly, the difficulties had more to do with looking the part than playing it.
In an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Vergara almost lashed out at her host Kelly Clarkson. The singer commented that Vergara doesn’t look all that different from Griselda as she does as her usual self. This comment seemed to rub off the wrong way on the Modern Family alum.
Vergara spoke candidly about all the extensive makeup procedures she went through. Vergara said on the show:
“It was hours. They did a lot to me! It was teeth. It was a wig. It was my nose. It was plastic from here to here! It was a lot!”
And it’s true the changes made to Vergara’s face to match Griselda’s bone structure are slight but they’re evident on a closer look. The actress also said that she had to learn to smoke and even change her style of walking to be able to play this character which was so much different than what she had done earlier.
One of her greatest concerns was that people would see her Modern Family character Gloria Pritchett in Griselda. However, Clarkson assured her that the America’s Got Talent host did not even look like herself, let alone Gloria.
Sofia Vergara Put In A Lot of Work For Griselda
Apart from the hour-long prosthetic makeup procedures, embodying a complex character, that too a real person is not easily achieved. Vergara was true to her job in every aspect. Her commitment to actually understanding the character makes it known that she wanted to do it justice. As she told People:
“It was a lot of work, it was a lot of preparation, I had to really investigate what it meant to be a woman in that era. A mother, a Colombian woman… that turned into this monster. So, it was a really difficult task for me to understand.”
She truly gave her all to the character.
Fans of the actress are thrilled to see her in a story as captivating and fascinating as Griselda Blanco’s. It was high time Vergara did a crime drama project.
Griselda is available for streaming on Netflix.
