A new promotional spot for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has now arrived, showcasing the voice of the Ancient One, bringing a version of a quote by her from 2016’s Doctor Strange.

The footage was released by Marvel Entertainment, and the commercial kickstarts with Doctor Strange’s image (Benedict Cumberbatch), which is followed by some images of various characters who are set to appear in the film, like Wong (played by Benedict Wong) and Scarlet Witch (played by Elizabeth Olsen). Throughout this spot, one may hear the Ancient One saying, “This universe is only one of an infinite number, Mr. Strange.”

The Ancient One is played by Tilda Swinton in the MCU, who made her first appearance in 2016’s Doctor Strange, where she was seen telling the hero about the whole multiverse. In this movie, the full quote of Ancient One warns against “dark places where powers older than time lie ravenous and waiting.” She then asks, “Who are you in this vast multiverse, Mr. Strange?” Ancient One would later appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe once again for Endgame in 2019.

While the title of Doctor Strange 2 suggests that the multiverse will not be anything more than a plot device, and writer Michael Waldron has explained that it will hold a lot more importance, revealing that the multiverse “shapes the emotional heart of the story.” He revealed, “If you’re faced with alternate realities and with alternate versions of yourself that has to become the emotional heart, exploring who you might be if you were a different version of yourself if you made other choices, the right choices or the wrong choices.”

The true meaning behind Multiverse of Madness has been explained by the film’s co-producer Richie Palmer. “[The cast and crew honors] each definition of the word ‘madness’ in this movie,” he said. “For example, it’s not just the craziness of what an alternate universe might look like, feel like, or sound like. When you see that there are infinite versions of yourself across infinite universes and you’re a different person in the different facets of you rise to the top.”

Apart from this, Multiverse of Madness will be slightly more horror-centric than many Marvel movies, with Sam Raimi discussing how the departure of the franchise’s preceding director, Scott Derrickson, did not affect the eerier elements of the movie.
