Timothee Chalamet Was Aware That His Playing Willy Wonka Would Receive Backlash
There are some movie and book characters that people have grown up with so they prefer not getting it messed up because it taints their childhood memories. This was the reason for the backlash behind Timothee Chalamet’s casting as Willy Wonka in Wonka, and he is aware of it.
During the London premiere of Wonka, Chalamet told BBC News:
“People are very protective over the characters they love, particularly Willy Wonka. They don’t want to see people mess it up.”
The Beautiful Boy actor went on to say that people have nothing to worry about because the movie was in great hands. He said:
“We were in great hands with [director] Paul King, and this is not the story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, this is a different story of how Willy Wonka became Willy Wonka. I think we did a great job.”
Timothee Chalamet might be a popular movie star now but he too grew up with the same stories as millions of other people. He loved the Gene Wilder version of the movie and is also a big fan of Johnny Depp’s version of the movie.
