James Gunn addresses Lex Luthor in Superman: Legacy
DC Studios’ Co-CEO and director James Gunn, who is excited to finally kick off his DC Universe with Superman: Legacy with David Corenswet as the new Clark Kent/Superman, has addressed the casting as Lex Luthor in the movie.
The director had previously explained during an interview with Michael Rosenbaum that the portrayal of Lex Luthor in his DC Universe is going to be real and grounded if there is going to be Lex Luthor in his movie.
He said, “Yeah… Everybody thinks there’s a Lex Luthor out there. But I’ve never said there was a Lex Luthor in there.”
Gunn further did not hesitate to say that he has not liked the previous versions of the character on-screen except Rosenbaum’s. He tells him that everyone knows that he was the best Lex, whereas Rosenbaum says that the actor’s version is not right for him. But the actor went on to tell Gunn that even though he cannot share if there is going to be Lex Luthor in his movie, if there is then,
“He’ll have gravitas. Or he’ll be Lex Luthor. He won’t be playing Lex Luthor, but he’s more acting like this character, or this, or goofy, or crazy. He’s gonna be something that’s grounded and real. I know you. I’m sure that’s–”
Gunn added to his statement that everything is going to be real and grounded. Fans noted that it seemed like they were dissing actor Jesse Eisenberg, who was the last actor to play the character, and Gunn quickly clarified on social media that he was not referring to Jesse.

Is Daniel Craig the new Lex Luthor? James Gunn clarifies
In a news report by Giant Freakin’ Robot, it was noted that DC Studios had offered the role of Lex Luthor to James Bond actor Daniel Craig for Superman: Legacy. But James Gunn, addressing the news on Threads said, “That is not true”.
Breaking Bad actor Bryan Cranston was also rumored to play the iconic super villain in the upcoming movie, but the actor himself was quick to debunk the rumors, stating that he feels that it’s just lazy casting. Now it has been reported that actor Nicholas Hoult, who was also one of the top contenders to play Superman, is being considered for the part of Lex Luthor.
In 2020, Craig was asked during an interview if he was ever interested in playing a superhero on-screen, to which he said that it is one of his dreams to play Superman on-screen. He pointed,
“I dreamed of being all sorts of other things – Superman, Spider-Man, the Invisible Man, even a good old-fashioned cowboy. But Bond not so much, which seems ironic now.”

A fan went ahead to ask the director online what he meant when he said that these superheroes are going to help Superman in the upcoming movie. Gunn replied, “We’re entering a world where superheroes exist and have existed for quite a while. They’re a part of one side of his world just like Lois and Jimmy are a part of another.”
When one of the fans pointed out that they were concerned that the upcoming movie is just going to set up characters for their spin-offs in other projects, but the director made it very clear that he has never used one movie to set up another movie and the characters are in the movie to help tell the story of Superman, in a better way not because to set up their projects. He lastly added that Superman and Lois are very clear protagonists.
Superman: Legacy is set to premiere in theaters on July 11, 2025.
