SUMMARY
  • Gal Gadot will be playing Evil Queen in Disney's live-action 'Snow White.'
  • While Gadot is excited, some fans are skeptical about her ability to embody the Evil Queen.
  • The future of Gadot's Wonder Woman remains unclear as James Gunn and Peter Safran design a new DCU.

Gal Gadot is replacing her Lasso of Truth with a poisoned apple, and it looks like some fans are not quite sure how to feel about it. Gadot is all set to play the Evil Queen in Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of Snow White, and it is nothing like her heroism in DC.

On the other hand, the fate of Wonder Woman in the new DC under James Gunn and Peter Safran remains unclear. After the rumored exit from DC, Gadot’s return looks almost impossible now, and it seems like her newest acting credit won’t help in that case either.

Gal Gadot Faces Criticism for Snow White

Disney’s upcoming movie Snow White looks promising. There is Rachel Zegler in the lead role of the princess, and she faces the Evil Queen played by Gal Gadot. The story of the movie is based on classic lore, and it will be about beauty, jealousy, and the poisoned apple of course.

But this time, it appears that the makers have tried to give it a modern twist. In an interview with Variety, both Gadot and Zegler mentioned that this time, Snow White would not be saved by the prince. This time “she’s dreaming about becoming the leader” and not “dreaming about true love.”

Gadot also seems pretty excited about her transformation from a superhero to a supervillain. According to Variety, she said,

I get to do something different. I get to sing and I get to dance, and I get to play the villain, which is something that I’ve never done before.

But not everyone seems convinced that Gadot can pull off the Evil Queen’s wicked ways. After the recent trailer, some netizens are questioning her acting chops and even considering Angelina Jolie in her place, as her look resembles Jolie’s Maleficent look.

Moreover, not everyone is happy about Disney’s efforts to modernize the story with a more women-empowering narrative. Some fans believe it will destroy the magic of the original story, and not everything needs to be a social message.

The casting choice for the movie is also being questioned. Some fans are doubting whether Gadot was the right choice for the Evil Queen, as they believe she has not yet completely proven her acting skills to the fullest. Such doubts from the audience definitely won’t help her make up for her rumored exit from DC’s Wonder Woman.

Future of Wonder Woman in DC

While Gadot is busy with her evil transformation on screen, the future of Wonder Woman looks sad for fans, at least for the coming years. Even though Wonder Woman 3 was teased, it doesn’t look like DC Studios is even looking at that as of now.

Gadot has also been pretty tight-lipped about her DC future. In an earlier conversation with ComicBook, she said,

I love portraying Wonder Woman. It’s so close to and dear to my heart. From what I heard from James and from Peter is that we’re gonna develop a Wonder Woman 3 together.

Having said that, in Hollywood, “develop” can mean anything from next week to the next decade, or even more. Moreover, James Gunn is reshaping the DC universe from scratch again, which means there will be new versions of Superman and Batman and all the previous Justice League members, and it is highly likely that the earlier storylines won’t exist anymore.

There are also talks about Wonder Woman potentially heading to the small screen. This is because of Paradise Lost, which will be an HBO Max series about Themyscira. In his announcement video, Gunn mentioned the show to be about a time before Diana.

That itself reduces the chances of Gadot reprising her role in DC’s future, and in the meantime, it will be interesting to see if she can impress her critics and increase her loyal Wonder Woman fanbase.

Snow White will be released in theaters on March 21, 2025.
