“We can’t do another alien invasion”: Not Brainiac, Zack Snyder Wanted Another Major DC Villain to Fight Henry Cavill’s Superman in Man of Steel 2
Zack Snyder’s time at DC, or as it is commonly referred to, the Snyderverse marks one of DC’s most successful eras in cinema history. The director’s brilliant storytelling and eye for detail made for the best of movies. Recipient of several accolades, his ideas come together so brilliantly that one wouldn’t want things differently.
However, creativity is a process. During the making of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which was set to be Man of Steel 2, Brainiac wasn’t Snyder’s first choice for the role of villain. The filmmaker struck down his idea, which many would have loved.
Zack Snyder’s First Choice For Supervillain in Man of Steel 2
The ever-evolving world of superheroes in all its dynamic glory is a result of imagination. And the beloved follow-up to Henry Cavill starrer Man of Steel was imagined differently than how it turned out.
For the follow-up film which was called Man of Steel 2 at its inception, director Zack Snyder wanted Metallo to be the supervillain fighting the Last Son of Krypton. Of course, things took a completely different turn when Batman was made to be a part of the plot and Brainiac became the primary supervillain.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly in 2015, Snyder gave a peek into his thought process for the follow-up of Man of Steel. He said:
“I remember talking about ‘What’s the next villain? We can’t do another alien invasion.’ Brianiac was definitely down the road. Metallo, I think, was going to be the main bad guy of this movie.”
Metallo’s battle with Supes would have been nothing short of legendary.
Metallo in Man of Steel 2
Metallo is an adversary to Superman, appearing in DC comics since 1959. He is a cyborg, with a kryptonite power source in its chest. This power source is his main weapon. He is a cyborg with a human brain and one of Superman’s strongest enemies.
Metallo’s involvement would have ensured a dynamic, action-filled movie. This would have worked very well if it had just been a Superman movie. However, the involvement of the Caped Crusader made for a different plot entirely.

While the film was in the making, some rumors suggested exactly this; the possibility of Metallo being the main villain in the next Superman movie of DCEU. Many took it as a sign that Snyder may bring Metallo to the silver screen in future projects. Had Snyder gone with his first preference, the DCEU would have gone a completely different path.
Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is available for streaming on Max.
