It’s like a story; it’s a journey, and I think those can be very entertaining. People always don’t need to know everything that’s happening, and they don’t need to see a repeat of the same movie; it should be a journey.
When it was mentioned that Coppola wanted to do something that didn’t tick boxes for commercial repeat value, Costner added that it was not a crime. The actor added that Coppola is not Ahab chasing a whale and taking everybody down with him. He added,
He used his own money, like I’ve used my own It’s kind of like we don’t think we’re hurting anyone.

Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis opens to a divided reaction at the Cannes Film Festival
The legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola mentioned at the press conference at the Cannes Film Festival that he had spent $120 million on making the movie instead of partnering up with a studio. He said,
I have no problems with the financials. Also, another thing is that my children, without exception Sofia, Roman, and my granddaughter Gia, have wonderful careers without a fortune. They don’t need a fortune. So no matter what happens, aside from the great winery in Inglenook that we still own in the family, we’re fine.
The movie, however, despite receiving a seven-minute standing ovation, opened to mixed reviews from critics, according to Forbes. The filmmaker had spent forty years trying to get the movie made, for which he had sold his beloved vineyard. Thus, critics dubbed the project one of his most essential artistic works.
Coppola’s Megalopolis follows three main characters as they fight for power in a declining empire known as the New Rome. The critics (via Screenrant) noted that the tone of the movie is uneven, adding that it’s somber and portentous at times, but some moments feel like unexpected levity.
Horizon: An American Saga Part 1 comes out on June 28th, 2024. However, Megalopolis does not have a date for a theatrical release in the United States.
