Sweeney has appeared in projects across numerous genres and one of them is horror. The horror movie Immaculate is her most recent venture. While fans do not seem to have any complaints regarding her performance in the movie, they have often voiced their concerns regarding its dim-light setting and wondered if director Michael Mohan had something to do with it. Luckily, Mohan has an answer for those asking.

2024 has been Sydney Sweeney‘s year with her debut in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe with her role in Madame Web and the psychological horror film Immaculate, on which she worked with frequent collaborator Michael Mohan. While the former failed to perform well at the box office, the latter has done slightly better if not a lot.

Sweeney had originally auditioned for the role in 2014, but it fell into developmental hell after that. After her success with Euphoria, the actress bought the rights to the screenplay and began working with Mohan on it (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Viewers have noticed the dim-light setting of the movie and recently an X user raised questions about it. Mohan answered it, writing:

This was absolutely not done intentionally. We have no control over the compression specs of each platform.

The movie follows the story of a young nun Cecilia (Sweeney), invited to live in an Italian convent which turns out to be hiding some rather terrifying secrets. It has been released to mostly positive critical reviews and grossed $23 million against a production budget of $9 million.

Immaculate has an ending that will send shivers down the spines of some of the most strong-hearted people. It is far too shocking and gory, and it turns out that The Voyeurs director wanted it to be that way.

In an interview with The Wrap, Mohan opened up about the ending as he said:

Everyone right now struggles with faith, right? There’s a lot of people [who] are angry out there and I want this film to bottle up that sense of anger and give them that sense of catharsis leaving the theater.

He further said that the goal of the movie is to get people talking and not make them think in a certain way because it is open to interpretation. He stated that he is proud of what he has made.

Immaculate is available for renting and buying on Apple TV.
