“We pitched it”: The Last of Us Showrunner Working on ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Reboot in Open Defiance of Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow
For more than a decade, Hollywood’s most beloved franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean, has enchanted the world with its swashbuckling sea adventures. Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Jack Sparrow has not just been an integral part but has become a synonym for the franchise. Since its inception, it has distinguished itself with unique hallmarks that delight audiences, eagerly anticipating each new installment. Although Depp’s departure was a shock for fans, the latest reports indicate the franchise is set to undergo a major reboot with The Last of Us showrunner at the helm.
Top-tier showrunner Craig Mazin confirms Pirates of the Caribbean 6
Craig Mazin, the creator of top-tier shows like The Last of Us and Chornobyl, is now setting sail on a fresh sea adventure with Pirates of the Caribbean 6. Mazin has already revived the idea for a sixth reboot of the beloved franchise. Disney liked it and got the creative gears turned on, even developing the script. But the project has been slowed down due to the pandemic, and as a twist to the tale, the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike has made the process even more sluggish. Mazin said,
“We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it; it’s too weird. And they did! And then he [Ted Elliot] wrote a fantastic script, and the strike happened, and everyone’s waiting around.”
If the ongoing disputes between the Writers Guild of America and film studios conclude, further progress on the sixth installment will resume. The previous installment, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tale, was released in 2017.
Disney resurrects Pirates of the Caribbean with Margot Robbie in the lead
With the recent confirmation of the reboot of the Caribbean Corsairs, however, the big question is whether Johnny Depp will return as Jack Sparrow. The character Jack Sparrow has been the heart of the franchise since its inception. Above all, his popularity was the key element in drawing the audience for every new installment.
His role as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean formed a cult following. Since his departure from the franchise due to marital disputes with Amber Heard, he has already announced in court that he won’t be working again as Jack Sparrow. After his retirement from the role, Disney is quite confident about the reboot, considering Barbie actor Margot Robbie as the lead role.

Despite Depp’s absence, fans were skeptical that the project would be canceled. However, the producer, Jerry Bruckheimer, clarified that it is still in the works but progressing slowly. Bruckheimer said.
“I think that that script will come forward at a certain point. We developed two stories for Pirates, and the other one’s going forward first, so that’s what we’re working on, to try to get that one made.”
But remember, in the world of movies, anything is possible; what is certain can easily shift tomorrow, and as they say, the proof of the pudding is in the eating, so it needs to wait until we receive an official confirmation.
