“We shouldn’t be doing this”: Kelly Ripa Nearly Broke Her Marriage With Mark Consuelos Over Bad Omen, Was Consoled After Iconic Talk Show Host Assured Her
Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos undoubtedly have one of the most successful marriages in Hollywood. They have had a pretty close-to-perfect life together – a meet-cute at 24, elopement at 25, welcoming their first son at 26, and then a happily ever after with two more kids and over a hundred million in the bank. Probably the biggest achievement for them so far is keeping the spark alive even after over 25 years of marriage. They claim to have a healthy and feisty s*x life, and are also pretty vocal about it. But all of it might not have come to pass if it weren’t for an iconic talk show host.
Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos’ romantic chronology
A lot of Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos‘ romantic history sounds like a legit rom-com classic. The two met in 1995 when Consuelos was auditioning for a role in the hit soap opera All My Children, on which Ripa was already a regular. Both of them were 24 years old at the time. It was an instant attraction for Consuelos, although Ripa was convinced she wouldn’t be interested in him. However, soon enough the feeling grew mutual and the two started dating.
But like every real couple, they had to face some downs before achieving a happily ever after. And the Live with Kelly and Ryan host spilled the beans on what went down between the two back in 1996. She shared during an interview with Anderson Cooper for her Live Wire book tour last year,
“He broke up with me, I’d like to point that out. He broke up with me and then I had to make him regret it. Okay? I’m not kidding.”
She then went on to describe their reconciliation which took place because they were both invited to be on Live with Regis and Kathie Lee.
“They put us together in what I now know is the live production office… We’re both sitting there, actively ignoring each other… What we had was two people in a room, and we reconnected. We started talking, and I made him beg for my forgiveness. Then we went and eloped the next day.”
However, the elopement was so sudden and took place after such a rollercoaster of emotions that it left Ripa quite unsure of the decision.
Kelly Ripa had doubts about eloping with Mark Consuelos
“They were deicing the wings, which I was like, ‘It’s a bad omen. It’s a bad omen. We shouldn’t be doing this. Look, they’re deicing the wings.'”
But in the next moment, all of her fears were alleviated, as she told Cooper,
“And all of a sudden, like an angel from God, THE Ricki Lake walked on board the plane. And I said, ‘We’re going to be fine.'”
The host responded,
“I love that Ricki Lake was the sign that, ‘Oh yeah, this marriage is going to work out.'”
Ripa then gushed about what a personality Lane was,
“Excuse me. 1996, Ricki Lake was the Oprah [Winfrey] of our time. It was like when she walked on the airplane, there was like a soft glow all around her. And then we decided to stay on the plane. We decided the plane was a good omen.”
It’s safe to say that Ripa and Consuelos are one fated couple. So many of the things that brought them together ultimately sound like cupid’s work, and they are all the happier for it.
