Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, is one of the highly anticipated movies of 2024. It’ll follow Deadpool on a mission with Wolverine that is reportedly going to change the history of the MCU. Shawn Levy directs the upcoming movie from a screenplay written by Reynolds alongside Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells.
Deadpool &Wolverine is special not just because Deadpool is one of the fan favorites but also because Hugh Jackman is going to play Wolverine after seven long years. Maintaining the R rating of previous movies, the third installment in the Deadpool franchise is going to be the first R-rated movie in the MCU. Ahead of the release, Jackman talks about his character in the movie, stating it is nothing like before.
Hugh Jackman shares about playing Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine
Ahead of the release of the highly anticipated movie Deadpool & Wolverine, actor Hugh Jackman, who returns to his fan-favorite character after seven long years, shared in his conversation with Vanity Fair about his character, stating,
I instinctively knew that Deadpool was going to allow us to get to a different side of the Wolverine character than I’ve ever played before, in every way, from emotion, humor, dialogue, and action.
The actor continued that returning to play Wolverine after he bid his character adieu in Logan ‘felt new and fresh’ to him, adding that he gets to share the experience with Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy. Jackman added that the three of them together are like three amigos, pointing out that there wasn’t a day where he wasn’t in tears laughing. Hugh Jackman shared that he felt rejuvenated playing a part that he had played for so long, but it felt better than ever.
According to ComicBook, Jackman has never shied from stating that it was, in fact, Reynolds’ push that helped him think and take up the role once again, and he’s glad. He added that the upcoming movie.
It is going to show sides of Wolverine that I’ve never played before, and that challenges me as an actor and excites me. I feel in many ways that fans of Wolverine—because of Deadpool, because of Reynolds and Levy—are going to see a fuller, more different side to him than you’ve seen before. And that was thrilling for me. What they gave Wolverine is so incredible.
Hugh Jackman also added that when the audience is going to watch the movie in the cinema, they’ll be able to feel the warmth of his character from the screen, adding that it’s funny, and irreverent, and the action in the movie is crazy. He mentioned that the experience of working on the third installment of Deadpool had exceeded everything he has worked on till now. The actor has appeared as Wolverine in about 9 X-Men movies out of which 3 were his standalone movies starting with 200o’s X-Men.
Deadpool 3’s Wolverine is ‘not the same’ as X-Men’s Wolverine
In an interview with Empire Magazine, Hugh Jackman and Kevin Feige addressed the questions about the Wolverine returning to the MCU after he died in 2017’s Logan. The yellow costume in the upcoming movie is straight from the comic books which is one major difference from his previous appearances. The actor mentioned that he is not going to play ‘the same’ character of Wolverine that the audience has seen him play. He added,
There are different sides to Wolverine we haven’t seen before in the movies. It was exciting for me. It’s great for Deadpool to have someone who will punch him in the face.
When Jackman was announced to return for the part, the studios made sure to clarify that the movie would not mess up with 2017’s Logan’s timeline. According to ScreenRant the version of Wolverine in Deadpool 3 can be from practically any other alternate timeline, and some noted that he could be from the live-action version of X-Men’97. Nothing can be said until the movie is released.
In his Empire podcast, while promoting his movie The Son, Jackman described his character in Deadpool 3 as someone ready to punch Deadpool in the face. Apart from these little bits, the actor has been tight-lipped about how his character is going to be different from his previous appearances.
