Johnny Depp is once again back in the director’s chair after what seems like an eternity away from Hollywood. Amber Heard and Johnny Depp’s years of legal battles over defamation have had consequences for both of them. Amber Heard’s role in Aquaman 2 was diminished to nothing, and Heard was forced to retreat outside of public attention due to severe social media criticism. Depp was fired by Warner Bros. from the Fantastic Beasts franchise.

Ever since Johnny Depp emerged legally victorious in court against Amber Heard, he has been trying to get back to the love of his life: cinema. However, this time the hat he would be wearing is neither a pirate’s nor of any other character as an actor. It will be the role of a director that he will helm this time.

Co-producing with Al Pacino and Barry Navidi, this would be the second time Johnny Depp gets behind the camera after 25 years. The last time he was in this chair was when he directed and acted beside Marlon Brando in 1997’s The Brave. In a statement at the end of production, Depp said he found the experience to be profound, fulfilling, and transformative. He also did not forget to pay his adoration to Al Pacino, saying he could never refuse him (via. Variety).

“I would like to express my profound gratitude to the entire cast, crew, and producers for their unwavering commitment and creativity. To Al, who requested that I make this film — how could I refuse Pacino? A sincere acknowledgement for generously contributing his talent and dedication to this project. Modi is a testament to the collaborative spirit of independent filmmaking, and I am excited to present this unique and compelling story to the world.”

The biopic follows Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani’s war-torn life in 1916 Paris, and Pacino plays the role of French art collector Maurice Gangnat, who has been painted in history by artists like Renoir. According to the official synopsis, the story is:

“On the run from the police, Modi’s desire to end his career and leave the city is dismissed by fellow Bohemians: French artist Maurice Utrillo, the Belarusian-born Chaim Soutine and his English muse and lover, Beatrice Hastings. Modi seeks advice from his Polish art dealer and friend Leopold Zborowski, but the chaos reaches a crescendo when he’s faced with a collector who could change his life.”
