Why Did James Gunn Delete ‘Suicide Squad’ Star Pete Davidson’s Cameo From Guardians of the Galaxy 3?
James Gunn helmed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was a huge success at the box office. The film starring Chris Pratt in the lead role was the final film in the franchise. The first film Guardians of the Galaxy came out in 2014, and a sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2, was released in 2017. The Guardians franchise was a successful one in the MCU. Gunn’s last film in the franchise revolved around Starlord bringing back the team together to save their friend Rocket after the demise of Gamora. As Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 debuted on Digital Friday, it released a then deleted scene from the movie featuring Pete Davidson. The footage confirmed the actor’s debut in the franchise. However, it didn’t make the final cut as James Gunn decided to chop it off.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 premiered on May 5, 2023, in theatres. The film, directed by James Gunn, marked his final film in the MCU. Gunn has taken over the DCU and is giving it a fresh start to compete with Marvel. The CEO of DCU is making major changes in the franchise.
Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, made its way on Digital Friday. A deleted scene from the film went viral and shocked fans as they saw Pete Davidson. The SNL star had a cameo in MCU with Guardians 3. However, his part didn’t make the final cut.
The deleted scene showcase, the 29-year-old actors’ slightly extended, yet still brief, role in the film. The scene shows the actor’s face clearly. Davidson had a full alien costume for his cameo as he played Phlektik in the final film. In James Gunn’s film, the Saturday Night Live alum had a silly interaction with Chris Pratt‘s Peter Quill.
The director took to Twitter to confirm Davidson’s cameo in the film and wrote, “My friend Pete not only voiced but actually came to visit us in Atlanta for a day and played Phlektik on set.”
In the end, the actor made it into James Gunn’s movie, but his face was hidden, as Marvel Studios used CGI to overlay the actor’s real face and transform him into an unknown alien.
James Gunn teased Star- Lord movie plans with Chris Pratt
The final film Guardians 3 helmed by James Gunn landed in theaters on May 5, 2023. By the end of the film, the audience saw “The Legendary Star-Lord Will Return” on their screens. It gave them an idea that their favorite character Star-Lord may return to the franchise to fight alongside the Avengers to save the world.
Gunn revealed how he and Pratt discussed the possibility of a The Legendary Star-Lord movie. The solo film of Star-Lord would take place on Earth and feature Peter out of his element. He said,
“Chris and I, forever, have talked about how great it would be to do a Legendary Star-Lord movie, a story with Star-Lord on Earth trying to adapt to the environment of Earth in the same way that somebody else might try to adapt to the alien environment of outer space.”
However, if such a movie comes out, Gunn would not be writing or directing it as the director has his hands full with the DC universe. The new DCU head is on a mission to change the future of the franchise.
