Matt Damon is undoubtedly one of the most talented actors of his generation. Damon had already appeared in several projects before he gained prominence for his work in the 1997 psychological drama Good Will Hunting. Alongside best friend Ben Affleck, Damon developed the screenplay based on an assignment he had written for his English class at Harvard University.

Good Will Hunting continues to be one of the best movies to date. It featured Matt Damon’s then-girlfriend Minnie Driver as Damon’s character’s love interest. However, things took a turn after the Oppenheimer star announced their split in an Oprah interview.

Recently, the Grosse Pointe Blank star took it upon herself to explain the somber look on her face. Under an Instagram video pointing out her expressions during the speech, Driver agreed with the commenters who said she looked said. Then she explained to one of them, writing:

“Matt had ended our relationship a few weeks before this, and was at the Oscars with his new gf… I was devastated. Wish I could have celebrated more as it was an amazing moment for all of us, and for this wonderful film!”

Driver going to the Oscars to support the movie despite her break-up was very brave of her. That was obviously in addition to the media scrutiny due to the attention that the split had drawn towards her.

Neither Minnie Driver nor Matt Damon have exclusively spoken about the reason behind their break-up. In fact, Driver claimed that she was unaware that they were not together anymore until Damon publicly said that they had split in the now infamous Oprah interview from January 1998.

During the interview, according to E! News, the Ford v Ferrari star said:

“Well, I’m single. I was with Minnie for a while, but we’re not really romantically involved anymore. We’re just really good friends, and I love her dearly….I care about her a lot. We care about each other a lot. It wasn’t meant to be, you know? And if it’s not meant to be, then it’s not meant to be.”

Later, Damon refuted Minnie Driver’s repeated claims that she did not know about the break-up. Hence, it is undoubtedly hard to get to the bottom of the matter. However, their break-up continues to be labeled as one of the messiest ones in Hollywood.
