Josh Brolin recalls a traumatic childhood story about his father, James Brolin

The actor laughed and continued to share the story where he revealed that he raised two pigs, Oink and Snort, and then one day they were having dinner and his father asked him, ‘Guess what you’re eating?’ Confused, Brolin asked his father, ‘What?’ To which James Brolin said,

‘Either oink or snort, and I was like, ‘What?’ and then went, ‘Yeah, you know that’s what we’re eating; that’s who we slaughtered, and I was like, ‘Why would you tell a kid  that?’ It makes no sense. Why would you tell your kid that with any semblance of celebration?

The Marvel actor shared that, according to him, his father was looking to have an impact when he said that. He also added that he can’t imagine saying something like that to his kid. Josh Brolin was asked by the host if the two of them had spoken about the incident, to which he replied that they did speak about it, adding that his dad’s an interesting guy; he’s super friendly, but there is a stop sign.

This incident almost comes across as something that his beloved character Thanos did when he got all the infinity stones in Avengers: Infinity War and snapped his finger. 57.5% of the human population survived the snap, and the rest, including animals, just vanished, like Josh Brolin’s pigs. Kevin Feige had confirmed in an interview that Thanos had indeed wiped off animals, birds, ants, horses, and more with his one snap. (via Vulture)

Josh Brolin decided to ‘break the pattern’ and be a better father to his kids

Actor Josh Brolin, further in his conversation, revealed that his daughter had given him a book about ‘Getting to know about my Dad,’ which was in reaction to a story she had heard from the actor. The actor recalled calling his father one day and asking him if they’d ever get along well.

Brolin’s late mother, Jane Agee Brolin, had divorced his father when the actor was 16, after which he went to live in Los Angeles with his father. He mentioned that he wanted to ask his mother so many questions, and the fact that she was an open book, he got to learn a lot about her, but he wanted to know more.

So, he called up his father to at least learn about him, and he didn’t want to make it seem like he was dying or anything. He noted that his father started to get stressed thinking about it, so he proposed an alternate way to know him; he asked him to record his answers.

Brolin said he wrote 107 questions and sent him those with a recorder with a battery and asked him to record whatever came to his mind. But his father put it off for some reason, which the actor learned six months later, and Brolin shared he didn’t want to go in that place, so he didn’t take it personally, but he understands that there is something about the history of his father that he doesn’t want to visit.

Three years later, Brolin’s daughter gave him the book, which he says he is still filling out. He said,

Now that’s breaking the chain. That’s a broken chain. I don’t know how, but that’s a broken chain.

In his interview with Variety, the actor revealed that the title of his memoir refers to a drinking contest between his mom and her boyfriend at the time, which Brolin witnessed as a teen. He revealed it ended after 15 rounds, and the boyfriend was found collapsed under the truck with his legs sticking out from beneath the vehicle. Josh Brolin mentioned that he just feels lucky to be alive and went on to share that he has been sober for 11 years.

Josh Brolin recently signed on for Rian Johnson’s Wake Up Dead Man, a Knives Out sequel.
