Nicolas Cage: the man behind Johnny Depp’s career as an actor
Johnny Depp is popularly known for his characters like Captain Jack Sparrow, Edward Scissorhands, Donnie Brasco, etc., and is admired by fans across the world. But it was Nicolas Cage who had suggested to the actor and musician to try acting after Depp’s first wife introduced the two of them.
Back in 1983, Johnny Depp was married to a makeup artist Lori Anne Allison, who had been working with Nicolas Cage on a film. Depp was 20 years old at the time and picking up gigs and odd jobs to support his passion for being a musician. But it was getting challenging for him to sustain a lifestyle like that. Anne Allison then introduced Depp to Cage.
During Johnny Depp’s testimony at the Fairfax County Court in Virginia during the trial against Amber Heard, he admitted via Far Out Magazine,
“I ended up acting by accident. I was a musician and I moved out to LA with my band when I was 20 years old…. There were a couple of things that happened when the band split up. I remember I was filling out a couple of job applications with a friend of mine.”

Nicolas Cage says overnight sensation happened with Johnny Depp
In his profile for the New York Times, Nicolas Cage was asked about his relationship with Johnny Depp to which he explained,
“The true story is that we were already friends. I was living in an old building in Hollywood called the Fontenoy, and I think I ultimately rented the apartment to Johnny, and he started living there. [Depp] was at the point in his career where he was selling pens or something to get by. But anyway, we were good friends, and we would play Monopoly, and he was winning a game, and I was watching him and I said, ‘Why don’t you just try acting?’”
Cage continued that Depp was hesitant initially because he wanted to be a musician at the time and told him that he could not act, but he pushed him to try acting out, so he sent Depp to his agent who had set up an audition for him for part in A Nightmare on Elm Street, and he got it.
Nicolas Cage noted in his interview that overnight sensations don’t happen but it happened with Johnny Depp but back in 2008 via Digital Spy, the actor noted that he was just a small step in his career.
