Back in April, during the defamation trial, Johnny Depp’s drug and alcohol abuse history was brought to the surface. It was a crucial topic in terms of the trial as Amber Heard has put allegations against him of assaulting her while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. When questioned on his possession of various drugs by Heard’s attorney, Depp was confident with his response.

He admitted possessing a huge amount of Marijuana among other psychoactive drugs. While testifying he did open up about his substance abuse history but he claimed it was only in the form of “self-medication”. And the claims made by his ex-partner were for the most part “plain false”.  The Edward Scissorhands actor also explained the story behind his substance abuse history.

It was all too obvious that Johnny Depp’s substance abuse history would surface at some point during the defamation trial. In April, the actor was questioned about on the topic by his former partner Amber Heard’s legal team. He also addressed his friendship with Hunter S. Thompson who is also known for heavy drug use. While the questioning took place, the Pirates of the Caribbean star admitted to possessing all the substances which were mentioned. It included Cocaine, Alcohol, Xanax, and Adderall.

Furthermore, he was also shown a picture of a huge bag of Marijuana recovered from his possession. To that Depp responded, “Yes Sir, that is a lot of Marijuana”. However, according to the actor, the allegations of domestic abuse under the influence of drugs by Heard were “embellished” and “plain false”. He defended himself further about his reason for using drugs and alcohol saying, “It was essentially just self-medication”. He pointed out that they were never used for enjoyment or for partying.

His Substance Abuse History

According to Johhny Depp, it all stemmed from his childhood trauma which had been very chaotic. And in order to escape he started popping the “nerve pills” that his own mother used to calm herself down. The Tourist actor had been only 11 years old at the time. He testified saying, “to escape the chaotic nature of what we were living through”. Moreover, he started getting into other stuff also such as smoking marijuana. But according to him, it never actually helped solve anything. Depp said, “One day, you’ll have to face those feelings”. 

Furthermore, a doctor and a nurse which had treated the actor for his opioid addiction testified that Depp was also addicted to oxycodone. It is a drug prescribed for leg injuries.  And despite the seriousness of his substance abuse issue, the Edward Scissorhands actor admitted to trying his best to keep it under control. His movie 21 Jump Street also revolves around and addresses drug addiction among young people.
