Known for his portrayal of the titular characters in Chuck and the Shazam duology, Levi is one of the handful of actors who worked in both Marvel and DC movies.

Zachary Levi has never been afraid to share his vulnerable side with the world. The actor has been open about his struggle with mental health in hopes of raising awareness and helping others. Things were really bad for the Shazam star, he was going through anxiety, depression, and battling suicidal thoughts.

In an interview with People, Levi revealed how he was “relentlessly bullied” as a child and that too by his own mother. His childhood trauma impacted his perception of life adversely. He turned to alcohol, drugs, and s*x as a coping mechanism. Talking about his condition Levi told People:

“I did not see reality correctly. All I saw was doom and gloom, and I couldn’t find myself or find my way out of it.”

At the age of 37, Levi went through an “intensive, life-changing” therapy, and making that effort to find love for himself has been, the most rewarding experience of his life.

The Reason Zachary Levi Got Shazam

In an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, for the promotion of Shazam 2, Levi shared how his deciding to work on himself and taking that step toward his betterment; changed his life in every sense of the word.

Levi said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon :

“I was in kind of a dark place in my life at that point. And then fast-forward about a month and a half later, and I’m in this super intensive, life-saving therapy, and I learned how to love myself, really, for the first time in my life, and I have this whole breakthrough.”

Initially, Levi decided against auditioning for the role that would become his most notable performance, because he didn’t think he had a chance to get the role of Shazam. So he instead auditioned for a supporting role. Eventually, the actor had a breakthrough with his mental health which gave him the confidence to go for it. As the actor recalled on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon:

“In the course of basically one week, I ended up going from auditioning for this whole other role to them saying, ‘Hey, we think you’re our Shazam.’”

Attributing the success to his mental health journey, Levi said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon :

“It’s indicative of when we do the real work to heal ourselves, and help other people heal themselves, that’s where all the good stuff comes from. That’s where that blessing landed in my life.”

Levi’s message resonates with his fans.
