As writer-director Zack Snyder declared his favorite film this year, the debate between Barbie and Oppenheimer seems to be over. Recently, in a promotional event for his upcoming film Rebel Moon Part One: A Child of Fire, Synder called Nolan’s film his favorite during a quick Q and A with a content creator.

Since the release of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, memes have been floating on social media, debating which movie is best and which film fans choose to watch, as both were released on the same day. Some fans liked Barbie, some liked Oppenheimer, and some preferred both. And now Zack Snyder has shared his chosen film. 

Barbie and Oppenheimer were released on 21st July of this year, and Barbie collected over $1.442 billion at the box office, more than Oppenheimer’s collection, over $953.7 million.

At the event, the rapid Q and A began with the man with a mic asking Snyder “The last movie you saw?” to which he replied “Chinatown (1974),”  by Roman Polanski. 

The interviewer asked Snyder his favorite film of this year, and he declared Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan as his favorite. 

Oppenheimer is a biographical thriller based on the American Prometheus written by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. The film, starring Cillian Murphy in the lead role, covers the important events in the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, who was the director of ‘The Manhattan Project’ during World War II and also known as the “father of the atomic bomb.”

Zack Snyder also mentions Empire of the Sun (1987) as a film that made him tear up. Not only this, he also noted Star Wars as his inspiration because, as an “11-year-old” that was the film, which made him realize that “I wanna make movies.”

Snyder made his directorial debut in 2004 with Dawn of The Dead, an action-horror film which was also nominated at the Cannes Film Festival in the same year. Later, he wrote and directed the historical epic 300 in 2007.

Zack Snyder is popular for his collaboration with the DC Cinematic Universe. He has directed four films under the banner of DC, Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), Justice League (2017) and Zack Synder’s Justice League (2021). 

Snyder has received over 13 nominations and 9 awards, including two Academy Awards (Oscars).

The Army of the Dead maker works on Rebel Moon, an epic space opera for Netflix. The first part of the film series, Rebel Moon Part One: A Child of Fire, will be released on the 22nd of this month. Its sequel Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver announced to be released in April 2024 on Netflix.
