Leonardo DiCaprio had been nominated for the Academy Awards multiple times but went on to earn it after encountering a grueling experience during the filming of The Revenant in 2015. The action-adventure drama went on to change the Titanic star completely both as an actor and a human being.

Set in the 1800s, Leonardo DiCaprio played the character of Hugh Glass, a trapper who survives all odds ranging from bitter cold, cannibalism, and losing hope for survival in the wilderness of Canada. The Shutter Island star has previously spoken about The Revenant and even mentioned that it was one of the most difficult movies he has been a part of.

Leonardo DiCaprio Had A Tough Time Getting Over His Academy Award-Winning Performance

From withstanding temperatures around minus degrees to adjust to only one and a half hours of the window of natural sunlight each day- Leonardo DiCaprio proved that he could pull off any challenge with respect to his projects. During an interview with the media outlet The Telegraph in 2016, the actor spoke about his grueling experience while filming The Revenant. He said-

“From the outset, Alejandro had an extraordinary vision: to create a film the likes of which audiences had never seen before. You don’t get those sorts of results without going above and beyond the call of duty.”

Leonardo DiCaprio even mentioned going through a major transformation both physically and mentally to bear the hostile environment in a different location in the north. The actor had never experienced something like this in his acting career. Leonardo DiCaprio had a tough time even after he got over with the filming of The Revenant. He had to take a sabbatical from his acting career as he struggled to get over the mental trauma of shooting the Tom Hardy movie.

As soon as Leonardo DiCaprio got over with the filming of The Revenant, the actor was ready to take some time off from the world of lights, camera, and action. The challenging experience that came along with the portrayal of the character of Hugh Glass took a toll on his physical and mental health. There was no doubt, that the actor wanted to relax and recover both physically and mentally.

After witnessing climate change very closely during the filming of The Revenant, Leonardo DiCaprio was moved by the human activities that adversely affected the balance of nature. An active environmental advocate, he spent maximum time spreading awareness about climate change during the four years after taking off after the filming of The Revenant. 

During an interview with The Telegraph in 2016, the actor even pointed out the climate change issue and how his experience while filming The Revenant made him more aware of the global catastrophe. He said-

“We are actually seeing the tipping point happen right now,”

The cast and crew of The Revenant witnessed the effects of climate change very closely as they had to change their location spot to Argentina instead of Canada because there wasn’t enough snow available up in the north.
