Blue Beetle Promo Confirms a New Supervillain in DCU Town
James Gunn’s DC Universe is set to introduce a lot of firsts in its forthcoming installment Blue Beetle, the first stand-alone movie for the comic character of the same name. Blue Beetle follows the journey of Jaime Reyes, who gets hold of an alien biotechnology called the Scarab, becoming its host, and gaining a suit of armor with extraordinary powers in the process. The young protagonist finds himself occasionally controlling the powers of the suit and occasionally being controlled by the beetle itself.

The movie will be the first DCEU movie with a lead of Latin origin, Xolo Maridueña. The 22-year-old has so far impressed critics with his work in the Netflix series Cobra Kai. But that’s not it. There’s one more first: the introduction of a new supervillain.
DC Universe’s Blue Beetle to Introduce a New Supervillain
James Gunn‘s The Flash failed to hold its ground at the box office, as Ezra Miller couldn’t deliver a convincing speedy performance to outrun other movies released at the same time. Even Pixar’s Elemental – the studio’s second-worst movie in terms of box office opening – managed to leave The Flash behind.
As such, it’s even more crucial for Blue Beetle, only the second yet-to-be-released DC Extended Universe movie alongside Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, to work well at the box office to give Gunn encouragement before his big 2025 overhaul for the DC studios.
Accordingly, we are set to see an introduction of a new supervillain in Blue Beetle that should add to the plot of the film. In the promotional video, we see the mention of OMAC, when Jaime Reyese is attacked by an orange energy blast.

OMAC, based on the Jack Kirby character of the same name, has been a regular feature of the DC comics. It’s a human being transformed into a cyborg after Checkmate created an OMAC virus during the OMAC project.
Whether OMAC plays a significant role in the narrative of the whole movie or his appearance is limited to just the promo shot should become clear following Blue Beetle‘s release.

Spoiler! Blue Beetle to See Death of a Major Character
OMAC’s introduction isn’t the only thing that may leave the audience stunned, as director Angel Manuel Soto confirmed to the magazine MovieMaker earlier this month that Blue Beetle will see the death of Jamie’s father, Alberto – the character portrayed by Mexican actor Damián Alcázar.

Maridueña, who plays the main character, admitted the death scene was his favorite part of the film, stating,
“Damián Alcázar, the actor who plays my father, was so generous and wise and calm. I remember thinking it felt ethereal for Jaime to see his father. but it was just his soul. It wasn’t his body.”
The movie will hit the theaters on 18 August 2023, and Gunn would hope Jamie’s handling of the power of Scarab and the introduction of OMAC will do the trick and help Blue Beetle outperform The Flash, at the minimum.
