Cannes Gives 5 Minute Standing Ovation to Top Gun: Maverick – Is It THAT Good?
Top Gun: Maverick triumphed high at Cannes 2022 after a rough and rocky production. The film’s Cannes debut was nothing short of a spectacle, with eight fighter aircraft soaring over the red, white, and blue smoke of the French flag while the cast and audience watched from the red carpet below. Cruise and his co-stars, including Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, and Miles Teller, truly enjoyed an epic entrance.
Even before the film was released, Tom Cruise, the starring actor, earned a standing ovation when he was presented with a ‘surprise’ Palme d’Or award. As he earned a standing ovation from the audience, Cruise was spotted getting emotional.
Top Gun: Maverick receives 5 minutes of Standing Ovation
The film Top Gun: Maverick had its world debut at the 75th Cannes Film Festival. Cannes is a typically challenging place for a new film to prove its worth, with crowds booing or applauding the films that are shown. However, the cast and crew of Maverick could not have hoped for a greater response.
The audience in Cannes was cheering even before the first second of the film had ended. This was because Tom Cruise was surprised with a Palme d’Or award, which he accepted with genuine astonishment. According to Variety, the audience gave Top Gun: Maverick a five-minute standing ovation. “This is an incredible evening and an incredible time .. just to see everyone’s faces. It’s been 36 years since the first ‘Top Gun’ and we’ve had to hold it years for the pandemic,” Cruise stated from the Palais stage, speaking about the film’s debut.

Many films have garnered a similar response throughout the years, only to discover afterward that general audiences did not agree. While a 5-minute standing ovation isn’t a guarantee that Kosinski’s sequel will follow in the footsteps of the original film’s smash success, it does give the impending sequel a lot of momentum. Unfortunately, Top Gun: Maverick was not chosen to compete for the Palme d’Or, the festival’s top prize. However, as the film’s critical acclaim builds, it appears like its sequel might be the summer’s first blockbuster success. The movie will be released in theatres on May 27, 2022.
