Charlie Cox’s Daredevil is probably one of the most popular superheroes to come out of the Marvel Universe after the Avengers. It had everything—the darkness pinched with a little bit of humor, followed by layered characters who did not shy away from violence. This made the show extremely popular, along with Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. So, fans were naturally heartbroken when the show got canceled only after 3 seasons.

Recently, fans across the globe felt like their lungs were being pumped with fresh oxygen when Kevin Feige announced Daredevil: Born Again, an 18-episode series that would be a continuation of Daredevil’s adventure. Although many MCU fans anticipated that, given Charlie Cox’s cameos in popular MCU movies and TV series, Charlie Cox himself was not that optimistic.

Charlie Cox found Vincent D’Onofrio delusional for holding out hope of revival for Daredevil

Recently, Charlie Cox has been making various cameos in the MCU as Daredevil after the Netflix show’s cancellation. He appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home and also on She-Hulk. So, fans were extremely hopeful about his future in the MCU again.

However, at the Wales Comic Con, Charlie Cox revealed that he was not as optimistic when it came to the revival of the show as his co-star Vincent D’Onofrio. He even thought he was delusional for even thinking such a thing:

“I really thought that ship had sailed, you know? I thought it was over. It had been a couple of years since [Netflix’s Daredevil had been canceled]. What I didn’t know was there was an embargo on that. So, there was an amount of time – I think it was probably two years – after the show was canceled before Disney and Marvel could approach us.”

Cox continued:

“So, during that time, I didn’t know that. I just thought it was over. And Vincent [D’Onofrio], who plays Wilson Fisk, him and I would chat occasionally on the phone. And he would kind of say, ‘I’m sure they’re gonna bring us back.’ I’d be on the phone being, like, ‘Mate, the guy’s delusional! He’s got to let it go.'”

The contractual clause that Charlie Cox was unaware of is that the Defenders, such as Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Jessica Jones, as part of Netflix, would not be able to make an appearance as their characters for two years post-cancellation. So that meant the characters had to be kept aside till the contract ended in November 2022. Many were worried that since the show was moving to Disney, the violence would be toned down a lot. However, the show will retain its TV-MA ratings even on Disney+.

Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio will reunite in Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again

Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio will appear in the highly anticipated Marvel Studio’s first TV-MA series, Echo, before appearing in Daredevil: Born Again. Charlie Cox also shared that he would like his character to meet his hero, which is Iron Man. However, Iron Man/Tony Stark died in Avengers: Endgame, so the chances of that happening are doubtful. When asked about the same at the Wales Comic-Con (via GamesRadar), Charlie Cox teased in a classic manner, saying:

It is not false hope given how Marvel has previously revived characters from the dead, like the insanely popular character Loki, the anti-hero, who was thought to be dead in Thor: The Dark World

All the previous Daredevil seasons are available on Disney+ now. There has been no announcement of a release date for Daredevil: Born Again.

Frequently asked questions

Why did Charlie Cox think Vincent D’Onofrio was delusional about a Daredevil revival?

After Netflix canceled Daredevil following its third season, Cox believed the show was finished and that there was no path back. His co-star Vincent D’Onofrio, who played Wilson Fisk, stayed optimistic that Marvel would bring them back, prompting Cox to say on the phone, “Mate, the guy’s delusional! He’s got to let it go.” Cox was unaware that a contractual embargo had temporarily blocked Marvel and Disney from approaching the actors.

What was the contractual embargo that delayed Daredevil’s return to Marvel?

Per the article, a contractual embargo prevented Marvel and Disney from approaching the Netflix Defenders cast for two years after the cancellation, a clause that affected the Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Jessica Jones actors until November 2022. Cox did not know about this restriction, which is why he assumed the character would never come back rather than realizing a revival was simply on hold.

How will Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio return as Daredevil and Kingpin?

Both actors are set to reprise their roles, first reuniting in Marvel’s TV-MA series Echo before continuing in Daredevil: Born Again, an 18-episode continuation announced by Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige. The article notes that previous Daredevil seasons stream on Disney+ and that no release date had yet been announced for Born Again.
