‘Don’t Believe In Capitalism’: Jurassic World Star DeWanda Wise Reveals Why She Said No To Captain Marvel
Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel brought a great dimension of storytelling to the MCU as Carol Danvers helped reinvent what Marvel Studios was doing with the cosmos. In this regard, one story element that showed up over time is that DeWanda Wise would have originally played Carol Danvers’ best friend Maria Rambeau instead of Lashana Lynch in Captain Marvel. Though Lynch did a great job being in that position, the story could have been shown up a bit different if Jurassic World star DeWanda Wise would have said yes to Marvel Studios.

During the Jurassic World: Dominion’s press tour, Wise revealed the time when she was offered to play Maria Rambeau in the MCU. She echoed that:
Well, I always correct people. I did not choose to leave. Like, I would never make that choice for myself, that sounds ridiculous. You know, you sign a contract for a TV show and it’s in the first position, and that’s just a responsible…you have audience members who are like ‘I would’ve taken a lawsuit.’ Good for you. I don’t wanna be sued! Not trying to be sued by Spike Lee and Netflix. So, you know, at the time it was very disappointing, and also difficult in that context, you know.

The Jurassic World actress also added:
We are obviously, a lot of actors, we see what you say. Like, we see when you’re being like ‘oh, you’re so stupid’ or whatever it is. And it’s a real practice to not get defensive when people are speaking about you like that online. But with this, obviously, clearly, if it’s not clear by now, Maria was a pilot, and to your point, what you just said earlier, I don’t repeat performances. So if I had played in Captain Marvel, if I’d already played a pilot, and then Colin called me for this and he’s like ‘Guess what? She’s a pilot,’ I would’ve been like ‘I’m so sorry, I don’t believe in capitalism. You’re gonna have to find someone else.’ You know? So, I just think everything happens in the time that it’s meant to happen and I’m very thankful to be here now.
It Was A Sane Decision For Her Career It Seems
While the actress echoed it loud that she’d have loved it to be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it looks like, till now, everything has worked pretty well and in her favor. The decision began as a difficult one because of her booking commitments. But playing Maria Rambeau in Captain Marvel would have kept her away from working on Jurassic World.

That being said, Maria’s time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe could have been expandable. But after the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, she might not be counted as a part of the MCU’s phase 4.
