Emma Stone recently earned her third Oscar nomination for her performance in Poor Things. But as the actress looks back on her acclaimed career, she’s opening up about some “total garbage” advice she received early on that no actor should follow. Stone accepted the Desert Palm Achievement Award at the Palm Springs Film Awards last week. In her acceptance speech, she expressed gratitude for getting to choose her own creative path as an actor. However, it wasn’t always this way.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, when Emma Stone first moved to L.A., an industry executive told her,

“For male actors, it’s a marathon, not a sprint, and in his eyes, for women, it was a sprint, not a marathon.”

This suggested that actresses have a short window of time to succeed in Hollywood before they are replaced or aged out of leading roles. But Stone realized the advice was completely misguided.

“That was 20 years ago, and I realized that advice is total garbage because the majority of the women that I look up to in this industry…have proven that as time goes on, life and work only get more interesting and more fulfilling,” she said, garnering applause.

Rather than follow the executive’s restrictive advice, Stone rejected those expectations and carved her own path in Hollywood.

She chose interesting roles that allowed her to keep growing as an actor, like her part in Poor Things. Stone described her character as “immune to external expectations and impervious to judgment and shame.”

By focusing on fulfilling work instead of an artificial ticking clock, Stone built a diverse resume of timeless performances. At only 34, she already has three Oscar nominations and one win under her belt.

“I hope for many more years of the chance to take swings and to try new things and to keep this marathon going,” Stone added.
