Emma Stone’s Heart-Touching Acceptance Speech At Critics Choice Awards For Poor Things

Emma Stone’s acceptance speech for the Critic’s Choice Awards won millions of hearts. The La La Land actor’s heart-touching speech was not only about Poor Things but also about the other talented stars who were nominated along with her in the given category. The Spider-Man actor revealed that she was in a full-blown shock to receive the award. She said

“This doesn’t make any sense. Thank you so much for this, it means so much to me. I was being serious. I don’t know what to say. This is completely crazy. Playing Bella was one of the greatest joys of my life. I got to unlearn a lot of things in playing her. Unlearn parts of shame and societal stuff that gets put on us, and I’m still working on it,”

While ending the speech on a funny note, Emma Stone said-

“This is the Critics Choice Awards — and it is about outside opinion — but I’m very grateful to the critics for this. But I’m just learning not to care what you think.”

Emma Stone Talks About Playing The Character of Bella Baxter

During an interview with the reputed media outlet People in October 2023, Emma Stone spoke about playing the character of Bella Baxter in the fantasy drama Poor Things. The actor spoke about what drew her towards the character of the childlike 35-year-old woman’s character who is untouched by the outer world. She said-

“I wanted to play Bella because it felt like acceptance of what it is to be a woman, to be free, to be scared and brave. She’s understanding what it is to be a member of society. The more autonomous she becomes, the more challenged these men seem to be by it.”

As reported by People, during the New York Film Festival in September 2023,  Yorgos Lanthimos spoke about one of the importance of the s*x scenes in the movie and how it helps in the character development of Bella. The filmmaker explained-

“It was a very important part of her journey. We felt that we shouldn’t shy away from it. It would feel very disingenuous to tell this story about this character who is so free and so open, and then be prude about the sexual aspect of it. It was clear from the beginning, but also from the novel, from the script, from my discussions with Emma, as well, as how we came up with those scenes. She had to be free; there should be no judgment.”

He further explained,

“The same way she learns about language and human suffering and love and science and politics, the same way she should be equally free about sex and anything else.”

Poor Things is based on Alasdair Gray’s novel of the same name released in the year 1992. The R-rated fantasy drama stars Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbott, and Jerrod Carmichael.
